Five Ponds Wilderness - Rock Lake

The Trip Report that was originally posted here has been edited to be inline with the interests and views of the general populous of this fourm. It has been reiterated that only the High Peaks are beautiful, challenging, and therefor "worthy" of Trip Reports.

However, I simply do not subscribe to that misguided belief in any way, shape, or form. The incredibly vast areas outside of the High Peaks are stunningly beautiful, they can be unimaginably challenging (if that's what you desire) and they most certainly are "worthy." Regardless, in the spirit of compliance, I will comply with the direction that the forum takes.

Again, please accept my appologies for the original posting of this non-High Peaks related report... The err is corrected. It positively will not happen again.

" Off came the boots and socks, up went the pants legs, and across the river we walked."

Done that a few times hunting and trapping.....putting on dry socks and boots afterwards is a pleasure that's hard to describe.
What it is is in your head !

Well, if you read the Sand Lake leanto register, I was the guy that got stuck at Sand Lake a few weeks ago because that river you are referring to was simply IMPASSABLE because all that rain that week -

made it over to the Sand Lake side no problem - but the following day ABSOLUTELY COULD NOT CROSS.

Even if my girlfriend and I took our socks and shoes off, the current there would have sent us down the rocky gorge -

Ironically, that spot is like THE ONLY rocky, dangerous area, under those circumstances, in that entire area - as far as I know!

Were we referring to the same stream / river - the one just after the intersection near Wolf Pond - on the way to Sand Lake?

Doesn't sounds like it. There's a hiking trail out to Rock Lake, from the west, that doesn't seem to show up on any maps. At least none that I've seen. I'd never have know it existed were it not for some adventurous friends.

This stream is called a branch of the Oswegatchie, but looking at a map there at least a thousand little streams with the same name. No telling which branch it was. Pick a number, any number...

Talked to a coworker about possibly doing a snowshoeing overnighter out there later this winter via this same path. Won't be able to get the vehicles very close, though, during the winter as the jeep trail will be all but impassable. That makes the hike in considerably longer, but still worth doing All hikes are worth doing, right?
