    Santanoni, Couch, Panther, 8.29.05

It was a great day on this range. Trails could not be more obvious and are reatively dry. Took us 1 hour 15 min each way to Couch and I don't think we were pushing it. So, the guidebook's estimate of 2 hours each way is too long--although the trail is now better than ever so one can make better time.

I would say, "you ran to Couchsachraga and back." That is excellent time for Couch. The moderate hiker would take two hours each way. It's a long friggin' way out there.

Seriously, we did not run or even hike to make time. It is a long way, but the trail is clearer than I've ever seen it, so it was smooth walking.

I know that speed is a subjective thing. I would tell people that it should take you two hours at most, at a very comfortable leisurely pace. But an 1.5 is probably more typical for the average hiker up there (at least the 'average' hikers I've been with).

I would agree, though, Couch is way out there. Probably should be dropped from the 46 list, in my opinion, except that so many of us have suffered through it, we can't bear that others would get a pass!

The problem is, it can't be dropped from the list, as not Blake, Nye or Cliff. In order to be a Forty Sixer, the peaks from the Original List must be followed.

However it is a pleasant walk to Couchsachraga. Never minded it. The hike up through Panther Brook is just so beautiful.
