    Indian Head 8-7-05

    [Pictures]

Met Chris (percious) at the AMR parking lot 8AM Sunday 8-7-05. Originally we were planning on climbing Sawteeth, but my shins were hurting so we opted for Indian Head instead. Chris had with him Colden, his 2 and a half year old son.

Colden only hiked a little of the road to the golf course, but once we hit the trail along Gill Brook, nothing stopped him for 2+ hours. We were amazed at how well he was doing! Gill Brook's waters were very low, but it still made for some awesome photography opportunities. I have a slew of really good flume and waterfall pictures. At one stop we encountered a pair of habituated deer, which almost seemed to be begging for food as they grazed eerily close to us (even crossing the brook 20 feet away). We don't feed the wild animals, but it was an awesome feeling to be that in-tune with nature for a few minutes.

Indian Head offered good views with only a briefly steep climb. We stopped on top and had lunch. Indian Head has been a destination of mine for a while and it alone was worth the hike. It probably has the best views of the Gothic's eastern slides. Fishhawk Cliffs are a short hike from Indian Head but we decided to save them for another day. Great excuse to hike this again.

By time we reach the register Chris expressed gratitude for not having done a peak that day. Colden weighs 30 pounds, plus gear made for a heavy backpack. Speaking of Colden, he is a charmer and made very little fuss the entire trip. He's also possibly the smartest 2 year old I've ever met! Mom and dad have their work cut out for them when he reaches adolescence!

It was another warm but dry day, crystal clear skies and minimal hiking traffic for this time of the year. Couldn't have written a better script!

Here's a view from Indian Head looking south.

What a great trip. It was nice to hike such a beautiful hike without worrying about things like peakbagging. I must admit, I was tempted by Colvin and Sawteeth, but I was rewarded greatly instead by spending some enjoyable wilderness time with Colden and Kevin without killing myself. Kevin was a great help, carrying 2 Liters and 2 Bagels to the top of Indian Head. This reduced my load to a paultry 40 lbs.

Luckily, Colden reduced my load by 30 lbs for about 2 miles! Colden just turned two at the end of May, so I was impressed by his trail prowess. We have not had a lot of time of late for hiking, so his non-stop root hopping was quite a surprise! It is amazing how fast they grow!

What a cutie! Before you know it he'll be dragging Dad up the trails

That's awesome. Hiking with your kids, I can't think of a better way to spend a day. Chris, to top it all of, it keeps getting better and better, I promise. He looks like he's having a ball.
