My boyfriend was coming to NY for a visit, and, as we do a lot of hiking in Brasil and love doing it, we decided to try to go hiking somewhere around NY. I had heard about the Adirondacks, but had no idea about the logistics, mainly because we could not spend much money… The forum was great in helping us out!
We got the Trailways bus to Keene Valley and arrived at Noon Mark Dinner almost 6 pm on Sunday (7/10). We got a ride from the Mountaineer to the garden and started on the Phelps trail around 7pm. We spent the first night on the first lean-to of the trail.
The next day we had to decide between following the Phelps trail all the way to Marcy or getting the Range trail. We decided for the Range trail, as this would allow us to climb many more mountains... We started on the Range trail around noon, climbed UWJ, Armstrong and Gothics – at this point we had realized that climbing the mountains with the big backpacks was quite a challenge – we thought we would go faster… but the trails have many parts that are almost like rock climbing. On the other hand, the trails are amazingly beautiful and the views are great, so, no complaints… We went down the Orebed Brook trail, between Gothics and Saddleback, to spend the second night.
We began the third day (Tuesday, 7/12) climbing Saddleback, spent a long time in the summit, as it was a beautiful day. We then climbed Basin – beautiful view! Then we went down basin and as our time was finishing (I had to be in NY Thursday, so we had to get the bus Wednesday at noon…) we decided to give up Marcy for now and go back through the Shorey shortcut. As we had to camp relatively close to the garden, we walked fast and got to the campsites close to the Interior Outpost around 8pm.
Next day we only walked back to Keene Valley and were even early for the bus!
Great trip. The bus ride is quite long, but it is an affordable way of getting to a very beautiful place! Now I want to go back and climb Marcy!!
Thanks a lot for your help!
