My wife and I got a really late start which came back to bite us. We got to the garden at around noon, learned the lot was full, and took the shuttle from Marcy Field. Trail from the Garden to 1st Brother was in great shape and very dry. The short distance between the first and second brother were also dry. Great views from both mountains. From the second brother on was pretty wet and muddy, with a few small patches of snow and ice, which were easily avoided. Enjoyed the great view of Big Slide from the Third brother, but was hoping for more of a summit. The .29 mile ascent to the summit of the Big Slide was the toughest and muddiest part of the trip. The view on top was spectacular. Got a great panoramic pic. with my digital. We returned via the slide brook/Johns Brook trail. It was definitely easier, but seemingly endless. Got caught in a thunderstorm the last 1.5 miles and missed the shuttle. A very nice older gentleman--who has scaled Marcy 197 times I might add (he was a former guide)--let us use his phone and his camp as shelter and we arranged a ride back to my truck at Marcy Field. The ascent was much more enjoyable than the descent, but it was a great day. -GG

The views were great indeed. Though the best part of the trip was my accidental encounter with the friendly old man who helped us out. His name just happened to be Jim Goodwin.Comment

I hiked Big Slide in April and I remember that view oh so well-I did Gothics last winter and I think you will really ,really enjoy those views-the Pyramid to Gothics trip was so spectacular .I kept stopping every 20 steps or so looking right and then left at the continuing 360 degree views-just amazing!Comment
