Erica's First Trip to the Adirondacks

I had a great time, although my plans were changed because I ran into more snow than expected. I had a lean-to all to myself each night, saw some wildlife, had time to relax and reflect, and got a lot of good hiking in. This was also my first solo backpacking trip, and also my first ultralight trip.

I drove up from NJ on Friday (may 6) and camped at the ADK campground at Heart Lake.

On Saturday I took my time getting ready, and headed out at around 11 AM. I walked to South Meadow taking the roads to get there, signed the register, and headed up the Klondike Notch trail. The trail was damp, like it had been really muddy the week before, but it was mostly good trail. The scenery reminded me of New Jersey, but of course we've only got hills down here. As I got higher, there was more snow, which was melting and making a lot of mud, but nothing deeper than my ankles. I took a great break 1 mile before the notch right on the creek. It was sunny, warm, and I got to watch a hawk fly above me for a few minutes. I moved on to Klondike Notch and headed down, passing by a couple heading up from John's Brook. I made it to John's Brook Lodge in the afternoon (around 4) and took a break. People said the bridge at the ranger station was out (but they had crossed it anyways). Those guys there were getting ready for a big campfire - The wood was stacked 4 feet high! I went to the river to consider crossing it, it was possible, but the water was high (knee deep) and I didn't want to get my boots wet. (Ultralight = no camp shoes)
Here's where I changed my plans, I didn't want to attempt the Great Range with wet boots, especially with where I planned on camping high up, as my feet get cold easily. So I decided to re-route my trip by heading up John's Brook and SW up the trail that goes just north of Little Marcy. I camped at John's Brook lean to and slept well.

Sunday - I woke up and it was cold, misty/rainy, and I couldn't see the mountians to the East. I didn't want to get out of my sleeping bag, so I didn't I drank tea and wrote in my journal.

It does sound like a good trip but is there part two? Like Marcy and Av Pass? Looks from the pictures like there was more to this trip. I have to admit that I cringed a bit when you left your itinerary the day before you headed out. Very ambitious. Especially solo with leftover winter snows and ice. Glad it went well. Also glad you used good judgement so that my cringing was unwarrented! Sounds like you'll be back!

Monday - Sunshine woke me up nice and early, promising for a warm day. I ate, stretched, and headed out. The trail was little used, no footprints other than deer. There were a bunch of downed trees, but nothing big or too much trouble to get over or around. The trail is beautiful, shady, and traverses a steep hill with many small drainages and a few larger creeks. I soon encountered some snow, just a few inches, but it continued to get deeper as I ascended the trail. Soon I was walking only on snow, it was still morning, and I was able to walk on the snow without breaking through, but it was warming up quickly. Pretty soon I was postholing every 10 feet or so. Not really a big deal, but I was off my planned route, on a trail that seemed less traveled, by myself, and I was worried about postholing and re-spraining my ankle (did it back in Feb.) or worse. So I took a break to look at my options, and I decided to turn around. But as soon as I made that decision, another hiker came up the trail. Two hikers had been about 15 minutes behind me, and were headed up towards Marcy. I talked to them for a little, and asked if I could join them for a while - They said sure and we were on our way.

They were two guys from Conneticut, Eric and Todd, a police officer and a 911 dispatcher, both trained as EMT's, and friendly, good hikers too. So the three of us postholed through 2 or more feet of snow for the next couple hours. I had it better than the guys, as I'm small and was traveling ultralight.

We made it to the trail junction where I considered heading down to Indian Falls and to camp East of Mt. Colden, but decided to go for Marcy with the guys. It would also put me back on schedule with my original plan. We made it up Marcy a little after 2PM. What a perfect day! Clear skies, a little breezy, and warm enough to take my boots and socks off. Took pictures, wrote in my journal and enjoyed the views. Eric and Todd headed back down to John's Brook and I headed down the SW trail. A group of 8 guys had headed down 30 minutes before me and packed the snow nicely. But it was still slow going, it was slippery, icy, mushy, and muddy. I took my time, not wanting to rush.

I made it to the Uphill lean-to, but it was wet around there and I thought there would be bugs in the evening. So I decided to go to Lake Colden. My boots were soaked with snowmelt from stream crossings, but walking kept them warm. I was tired, and there was snow and ice all the way to the last 1/2 mile to the suspension bridge, but I was very happily surprised by the falls on the Opalescent River. They were raging! - Warm spring day in the afternoon.

Finally I made it to Lake Colden, and I found a lean to (Cedar Point) just south of the ranger station. As I unpacked and relaxed, I saw a Martin (looks kindof like something between a weasel and a fox) skirting around the edge of some treees. What a beautiful creature. What I didn't see was the bear that pulled down some other camper's food sack and came within 10 feet of the other lean to! Glad I had my bear can. Slept very well!

Sorry this is so long - I like to write.

Sunday - Woke up to sunshine and Lake Colden as smooth as glass. I was sore from the day before so I lounged around and had a good breakfast. Although I had planned on going to Wallface Ponds that day, I figured there would be more snow on the way up and at the camp there, and I was low on fuel - I used a new stove for the trip - so I decided to call it a trip and head out to Heart Lake where my car was parked.

I knew the trail to Lake Colden was well traveled, but it is still a rough trail around Avalanche Lake. I got to the pass and wondered how far I would get that day! But it was smooth going on well maintained (and used) trail all the way out.

I got to the ADK Loj to get a campground at 6 and their thermostat said 75 degrees! It was warm that day!

I showered, went into town and had a veggie burger and a beer at the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery, and had a good sleep back at the campground.

Overall, I had a great time. The rangers reccomended coming back in September during the week, as everyone's back in school or working, and things are cooing off. I think I will.

Great trip report Erica and really nice pictures! I'll be making my first trip into Lake Colden and the Avalache Pass area in about a month and your pictures really got me excited for it! Thanks! A little disappointed you didn't make it to Wallface Ponds as that's another place I'm headed on the same trip. I was looking forward to hearing about that, but oh well.

Bring extra socks. The trail into Wallface Ponds is very muddy and your feet will get wet.

We signed up for 46er trailwork for Wallface Ponds area for May 28th. I'm not sure exactly where or what we'll be doing yet, but I'll post a report afterwards.
