    Berlin Mountain 4-24-05

    [Pictures]

Part XVI in a series of places other than the high peaks to hike during mud season.

Valerie, her poodle (Gerard), and myself hiked Berlin Mountain in eastern New York this past Sunday. After a rainy Saturday and Saturday night we were expecting sloppy conditions. Sunday turned out to be a breezy but beautiful partly sunny day with no rain. Trails were wet in places, but generally not too muddy. There was a single stretch of standing water as we approached Berlin Mountain from the south.

This was my first trip on the Taconic Crest Trail. I was impressed. The views through the still open forest and slight grade changes offered a great alternative workout. Only encountered 3 people the whole afternoon.

Stats: Peak elevation is somewhere between 2800-2900 feet. Conflicting data from topo and what's quoted online. Round trip from southeast hollow is 8.5 miles with almost 1600 feet total elevation gain. I'm attaching the route from our descent in Topo (TPO) format and a text file. Start time was noon (12PM) and we were back at the car about 4:30PM. This included a few stops at a moderate hiking pace.

There's still snow on slopes at Jiminy Peak (picture 3).

Thanks Rivet...I was wondering if that was Jiminy or Brodie. It seems Jimminy has added a lot of trails since I was there last.

Cool, your measurement just about matches the GPSr reading. Thanks!

            more pictures of/from berlin mountain...

Recently climbed Berlin from the opposite side (via route 2/north). It was an awesome day despite the cold, wind, and clouds. 30 minutes after descending the sun started poking through. I managed to capture some beauty on the hike out.

Thanks for posting pics, Kevin. My camera battery gave up after 2 shots. I've since ordered 2 new rechargeable lithiums so I should be set for a while! The views were fantastic and I was VERY FRUSTRATED because I couldn't take my own pics.

                Kev-

When I click on Berlin Mtn 3-18-07 (in your alphabetical listing) I go to 2007 hikes but the pictures are not there.

Clay, you may need to hit F5 on your keyboard to refresh/reload the web page (which means you've been there before since it's showing old data).

Well, what can you expect from a "rookie".
