    Allen Mountain 02/06

    Special note:
This was supposed to be Hillman's job but somehow it got foisted onto my fingertips.
(Pictures of this and other trips coming very soon!)

Participants: Rik, Hillman, Neil, Eric, Jenny and Dominic

This was Jenny’s first winter peak and her first time ever on snowshoes or crampons. She was awesome! It was my first time hiking with Rik and Eric who turned out to be super guys. Man, do they fly!

If you’re thinking of hiking Allen, now is the time to go. I can’t imagine it being any easier than it was yesterday. The first 5 miles or so on the official trail were on frozen snow in the cool morning and barebooting was the order of the day. Just after the turnoff, at the gravel pit we put on our sowshoes but could have waited a lot longer. The herd trail was easy to follow thanks to a group of 10 who had been in a day or 2 before us.

For me, the route to Allen gets interesting at Allen brook making the approach the longest I’ve done so far. (I suppose Seymour from the winter parking lot would be right up there.)

As we motored our way to Allen Brook we were slapping ourselves on the back for what great time we were making but I couldn’t help wondering how I would feel going back over the same trail later on. At least I was well prepped: I had 2 full rest days in me after hiking Marshall and having eaten loads of carbs the day before I was only short on sleep. Additionally, I made myself eat and drink steadily all day long.

The trail up Allen Brook was no where near as “bad” as I was expecting and I’m sure that was because of the perfect snow conditions. No need for crampons, in fact I only used my Northern Lite snowshoes all the way up. To boot, we had a perfectly sunny calm day so at rest stops on the slide we basked in the sun in our t-shirts and marvelled at the ever expanding panorama of peaks. It seemed like there was something new to see with every vertical foot we ascended.

Allen offers views of the Dixes, Colvin, Nippletop, Skylite, Marcy etc. from a rather unique angle and we spent a lot of time determining which peak was which before reluctantly packing up and heading down.

Butt sliding down the upper portion of Allen brook was lots of fun. After you break out of the trees you have a long straight shot down some steep terrain. Rik and Eric were standing in the middle at the bottom of the steepest section as I began my descent and when they very quickly got the heck out of there I knew something was up. I shot over a lip of bare ice, got some air, landed on some more ice and then hit the soft stuff and stopped. Invigorating!

I quickly got my camera out and took pictures of the others as they came down a less dramatic but nonetheless rapid line of descent. Lots of big, sunshiney smiles and laughter all around.

The trip out was long. Very, very long. That 1 mile section from Skylight brook to the top of a height of land went on forever. One consolation was the beautiful sunset that silhouetted the mountains and the trees and then later on the stars on a moonless night. However, on the way out from Allen once the headlamps come on and all you can see are your partners’ little halos of light and the trail in front of you there’s no way around it: it’s a death march.

So glad that you made it, knowing how badly you wanted that Mountain. What a pretty day you had to go. Waited in anticipation curious if you made the summit or not.

Now can't wait to see the pics.

    CONGRATULATIONS !!

I have just one thing to add:

OK I'll add a little more. First off the whole group did great and was a lot of fun to hike with. I would hike with everyone again in a heartbeat. Jen was amazing for a first winter peak and first time on snowshoes. Dominic was the one flying but as a teenager I could fly too! Seems like a great kid. Eric and I weren't really flying but I'm sure it looked that way to Neil who kept wanting to stop and smell the roses!
Conditions were near perfect and the weather was better than perfect. T-shirt most of the day! Great views. Saw a couple of Pine Martens! Butt sliding the slide on a sunny day almost felt like too much fun to be legal!
It is a long hike. I think we figured about 18.5 miles. We finished in just under 12 hours. Glad Neil and Dom made it home as I was a little worried they might turn the van off and not get it restarted. (It wouldn't start in the parking lot when we got back!) Hope Doug and Jen had a safe journey home. I'm sure Doug will chime in when he gets back from Chuck E. Cheese with Jen's kids.
Neil did you make it to the beer store on time?

No celebratory brewskies. I was so unbelievably tired that the only thing I wanted was to go straight to bed.

Congrats Neil. If it's any consolation, Allen was just as challenging in the fall. Not because of the terrain or slide (though it is slippery), but because of the length of the trip. It's about 18.5 miles, and in 12 hours you made excellent time... in any season.

Look forward to your pics, I had no views when I climbed Allen due to cloud cover. Maybe if the views look promising I'll make a return trip.

Great job, everyone! I remember that "death march" also, and we even had the benefit of an overnight (did Allen the second day and out). We were beat, but probably mostly because I was low on fuel, and too tired to stop and do something about it (sounds irrational, and I know it's bad!). Sounds like the only thing you "missed" are the infamous slimy rocks, which sure slowed us down plenty! So, crampons weren't even needed at that small slide area near the top? In addition to the top, I remember particularly enjoying the walk through the open fields.

So Neil, you must be close to finishing, yes?

You had hauled that gear on your backs which probably negates the benefits of breaking the trip up with a night's rest. I bet it was easier to summit Allen yesterday than any other time of year. Almost cheating to call it a winter ascent. Walking through those open fields is a unique Adk experience.

I'm at 39 as of yesterday, Dom is at 38 and needs Ttop which we're hoping to do before march 21 and after 5 or 6 feet of snow falls. Other than Ttop for Dom our remaining peaks are in 4 areas. Cliff/Grey, Donaldson/Emmons, Whiteface/Esther. For the grand finale we'll do RPR this summer when the weather's right. No 46th for us in the rain!

Yesterday Rik and I were talking about how doing all 46 enables you to piece the mountains together like a puzzle. You get to know the spatial relationships between the summits. For instance we couldn't decide whether we were looking at Basin or Saddleback yesterday. (After using Topo!'s route tool to draw a straight line between Allen and Saddle vs. Allen and Basin I would say it was Saddle.)

Congrats to all who finished Allen yesterday...I was one of the 10 (actually 9, one turned back due to a broken snow shoe) who participated in breaking trail to the summit on Saturday. Claudia Warren lead the group...Randy, Shaleen, Wayne, Bob, Joe, Jim, Chris and myself (Denise) all in tow.
Saturday was a beautiful day as well. Warm temps and bright sun. We followed some broken trail up to a point shortly before the Skylight Brook. It was reported that some other hikers had gone in, but turned back.
A great time had by all...especially the butt slides on the way out! We finished in exactly 11.5 hours.

Bob Scaife took some amazing photos. Check out his photo gallery

Denise, that was an ADK Club sponsored hike, right?

Funny, I hiked Allen with Claudia last Fall. It was the second or third time I hiked with her, but the first I had a chance to chat for much of the hike (she's usually blasting away out front and I'm laboring near the back of the pack ). She's a hell of a hiker and person, we exchanged a lot of great info for those few hours. I wish she used the internet more, it would be fun having her around here.

Denise, you working on your winter 46 now?

I would like to add that allen has beaten me like a redheaded stepchild yet again. I really bonked on the climb, which really put me in perspective for the slog out. I have never been that slow. It was a beautiful day to be in the mountains. I would have to think that every peak is in perfect hiking condition right now due to the strange weather we have been having. Also, I have determined that allen doesn't like neils' or my car...

The kids made it to school. It was a very long 4 hour ride home.

Was Jen pissed off about getting out so late? Tell her from me that she is an awesome hiking force. When you said 1:00 was your turnaround time I knew 100% for sure that that wasn't going to happen. I think we left the summit at 2:20. I felt like a kid at recess up there.

I only got 3 hours sleep the night before and I fought sleep all the way home. It was awful. The next time I do Allen I'm going on a Saturday and am heading to the nearest motel after.
