Sounds like a cool area. Unfortunately it seems like more people prefer to spend their money at the more corporate areas.

Yes, it was a fantastic place... when there was snow.
We used to say "Two feet of powder, three feet of rocks". The terrain was, uhmm, rugged. I remember sitting by the radio broadcasted ski reports, hoping to hear Harry Downey say those magic words, (Hickory Hill, all slopes and trails open".
Often it was scratchy, or breakable crust, or frozen death platters.
But when the snow was good, man, there was no place better. Untracked lines everywhere, fantastic tree skiing, bumps were well formed, spaced perfectly and often taller than my head!
And half the fun was the Poma ride to the top. We used to lock ourselves in wedging our skis when the stick was engaged, we would get launched 25 ft up the hill before our skis touched down again.
I went back and skinned/skied it a few times when it was closed and it was bittersweet. Around every corner and rock were echos of good fun with friends and family and memories of times gone by, ghosts of my former youth...

nice article, it really captures the magic of Hickory. I first skied Hickory in 1979, when My Darling Bride and I were not so skilled, it was quite an adventure. On that first for us day, one half of Honey Run was blocked off with gates for a high school competition and we had no choice but to ski the bumps near the poma.
since that day, we skied there for many years, bringing along our kids as well as nieces and nephews.
in 1985, Hickory opened on a Saturday with 62” of untracked powder, the result of a big nor’easter and several days of additional snows. It was fantastic and we went back with friends for more on Sunday.
I’ve gone back in the dormant years to skin and ski, but the experience was bittersweet. Around every corner and rock and tree were echos of earlier days, when the kids were young, and so was I.
to this day, I maintain that if you could ski Hickory, you could ski ANYWHERE!!! It was the next best thing to a back country experience, but with a warm lodge at the bottom.
i hope they survive and I’m satisfied knowing that I got to experience skiing there with family and friends.
