Some good places to go bouldering in the southern dacks. . .
1. Good Luck Lake Cliffs, some great boulders at the base of the cliffs
2. Nine Corners Lake, after crossing the outlet on the way to the first 'corner' there are some good boulders to the right of the trail, lots of blueberries in the area.
If I find more I'll post. -

finally some replies, and all it took was a designated climbing forum! i've done some short scrambles here and there since i posted this thread and got myself almost stuck 300' up the rock wall off the trail up crane mt. but havent seriously gotten into it yet. i also hear from my borther-in-law that there is a pretty well known place up near Niagara. i'm hoping to get more into climbing, be it technical and/or freeclimbing, next season. but i welcome your replies and if anyone else has any more info i'd love to hear it.

Can someone explain bouldering to me?
It is my understanding that it is like rock climbing with no ropes, up short rock walls with a pad below in case you fall.(?)“One of the penalties of an ecological education is that one lives alone in a world of wounds.” ~ Aldo LeopoldComment

I'm not a big fad of bouldering but it can't be beat for rock climbing simplicity.
mgear.com over the internet;
EMS or the Mountaineer or Boardertown in Lk Placid.
Specifically for the Daks, you might want to include a small wire brush among your arsenal.
Other, lesser known boulder areas in S. Daks:
East of the Crane Mtn. Trailhead (tons of big boulders in the woods)
Cliffs along the Crane Mtn. Trail just a bit below the big ladder
Summit Cliffs of Crane Mtn.
Cliffs near summit of Pharaoh Mtn.
Shanty Cliffs
Paintbed Trail, boulders near the Height of Land.
Blue-blazed trail just south of Snowy Mtn. Trailhead on Rt. 30 south of town of Indian Lake (walk about 10 minutes in to some bizarre and awesome boulders).
I boulder around King Phillips Spring a lot as a warm down when I'm up in the High Peaks.Comment

In the Adirondack explorer newspaper that just came out, there is a whole story on bouldering. As I was reading, I couldn't believe how awesome it seemed to be. No ropes, no big equipment, and all adventure. The only draw back is that the mats to catch your fall, are supposedly from 100 to 300 bucks. I don't have a job and that's alot for a teenager to save up for. But when I do climb, I'm going straight to Petit Mountain cliffs in Wells. Nobody goes there, and there perfect cliffs to go bouldering onI cherish the outdoors. Its the adventure, the unknown, and the call of the wild that gives me its thrill, passion, and deepest respect.Comment

I was thinking the same thing about price for bouldering, there are a few over at ems for under 200 so i guess that woudl be the best bet. now i just gotta find the money to get one! that and a pair of climbing shoes. On the mountieer website they have a pair on sale for like 40 bones. To bad i dont have that money either"It's not where your from, it's where your at."Comment

if you campare it to the price of technical climbing gear its not that bad at all, and also consider that any piece of "outdoor gear" is relatively expensive. basically i think that it comes down to committment, if you're committed to a hobby, sport, etc. you're willing to spend the money and bouldering is no different in my eyes. however i also have a hard time spending money on a suped up piece of foam. although its not smart i'll probably just end up taking my chances.Comment

i live in buffalo, and from i have heard there is some bouldering in the niagara gorge.. i think any of the EMS in my area may know a little bit more seeing as how i have never done, but i know there is definately climbing there.Comment

The real cost is shipping and liability. Crash Pads are little more than high-tech couch cushions wrapped in nylon and sporting shoulder straps. They're big and bulky so they cost a bundle to ship; and of course, when johnny hotshot falls down and cracks his head because he bounced off the pad, mom and dad tend to think lawsuit.
I bouldered for decades before crash pads were invented. We just kept the altitude low and as friends, spotted each other. To be honest if you're far enough off the deck to NEED a pad there's a good chance you'll get hurt if you fall regardless, because lining up a pad and then crashing on it properly aren't guaranteed. They will in all liklihood greatly decrease the scope of injury, but I still think you want a helmet in the very possible event your noggin hits real estate instead of pad.
What pads really do best is keep your shoes clean!Comment
