    Any Climbers on the Board?

Hey guys... Now I know there are many here who are MOUNTAIN climbers... not what I'm looking for (congrats if you are!) I wanted to know if anyone here is into technical climbing. This means ropes/gear and flat, steep rock.

I was looking through don mellor's book this morning and I was delighted to find quite a few climbs near my favorite mountains. These include Pharoah, and Big Slide.

I have been climbing out of doors since the spring here in CT, specifically with my wife and www.ctclimbers.com . It's been great, and I cannot wait to apply my knowledge to some ADK backcountry. Just wondering if anyone on the board shares my interest.

Please don't encourage Val along the same lines.

There are a ton of great spots in the ADKs (Chapel Pond, Basin). Some are easier to get to then others. I know there's a thriving climbing community up here too. Our local EMS shops have plenty of climbing gear, a good indicator that they're selling it to someone for use in the area.

Have you also posted on VFTT? I'm willing to bet there's a few ADK climbers over there.

I think Wildernessphoto is interested in climbing.

Me? I'm more of a faller and slider then climber...

I got into it, I say about 10 years ago, for a couple of years. The Beer Walls in Keene were fun, for top roping. I believe it was the Sword climb there, that was quite challenging. I enjoyed the multi pitch climb up the Chapel Pond Slide. But after doing the 400' foot, Multi-Pitch climb up the Hurricane Crag around Elizabethtown, I gave it up. It wasn't my "cup o' tea." I found it quite scarey, "hanging on a rope," getting up the side of the cliff. I did strictly top roping for a little while after, then gave it up entirely.

Then oh boy, I got into Slide Climbing, doing more than a dozen of them, in the Adirondacks. After doing the Nippletop Slide and the Eagle Slide of Giant, shortly after, I gave that up, pretty much myself. They were getting too dangerous for me.

Drop by and I'll show you all the fun stuff on Crane Mtn. IF the weather ever chooses to cooperate.
In fact...I've this little 130' buttress I cleaned last fall and am just itching to get back to for a go. And another one further off on the SE face. And come to think of it, a couple on the summit cliffs, too. And the Wayout Wall really needs a return look. And then of course there's all the stuff on Black Mtn (the one that's part of Gore) and Black Mtn. (the one next to Rt.28 on the way to Indian Lake) and gosh, Shanty Cliffs haven't been out to for a bit, and...so on.
If you think climbing is great fun when it takes an hours worth of approach well, give me a call.

did someone say climbing!? Ha! Well, summer i consider my "off season", as my heart is in the ice climbing, but yeah, I rock climb frequently. I have gone to just about every crag in the dacks, and must say I still have yet to climb slide rules (on big slide).

If anyone wants any pics of routes or approaches, let me know. I also am in the process of starting up a adirondack specific rock and ice forum. I hate to paste the link here, so if you are interested let me know. If its ok to post links in here to other forums, then I'll do that too. The site is very infant, but I plan to have routes and pitchs for climbs. In the winter is when I was going to really bring it online, but the forum is there nontheless and could use some testers

            thanks,

                JClimbs--

How far is the approach for Crane Mtn? That is near Schroon, right? Any 5.3/5.4 routes?

I'm looking for a place nearby schroon to bring beginners.

Ok ok. Not much there yet, but the forums could use some beta testing and I would really appreciate it to boot!

Chris, we're VERY friendly with regards to advertising forums on adkforum. It's all about helping people the best we can, not a virtual pissing contest . When I get a chance I'll even add you to our resource page (list of ADK related links).

You're all set Chris. I even registered, but I'm not a climber and have nothing to contribute so I'm not going to post.

Are there other sites for ADK climbing that we should be adding?

                        A few suggestions.

It would be good to add boards for the following:

                        Forum suggestions/questions.
                        Finding partners.
                        Events/Trip Planning.
                        Trip Reports.

Everything else looks great. I'll pass this sight on to www.ctclimbers.com because some people on there might be interested.

Hey thanks! I plan on adding a slide climbing section as well. Perhaps then you will post! Oh, and my previous offer to "introduce" you to climbing still stands!

Depends on where on the mtn. you want to climb. There are big boulders you could actually top-rope (20-35' tall) about 5 minutes' walk east of the trail parking lot, but the best beginners cliffs would probably be on the prows east of the summit, a stiff 1.4+ mile hike. It is a great place to be though, with a good range of routes (from a 20' 5.2 to an 80' 5.10). And once on top, there are other, longer and harder routes along the summit ridge.
Once the bugs die down a bit the Waterfall Wall has a nice 90' slab that works well for young folks. There isn't much of anything else there, however. That is on the SE side of the mtn. and requires a bushwhack to get to *unless* you let me know you're coming: there's a much easier trail to it.
Gull Pond is closer to Schroon but my exploration there hasn't come up with any beginner friendly stuff. So far the easiest route I've done there was 5.7 and most were 5.9 or 10. It might be worth exploring a bit, however.
Pharaoh Mtn. has great cliffs near the summit, too; though I can't recall if any of them would make good kidstuff.
It is about a forty minute drive from downtown Schroon Lake to Crane Mtn. btw.

JClimbs- Thanks for the beta. I will file it away in the old memory bangs... A 1.4 mile hike doesn't sound too bad as long as it is not a whack. A couple of weeks ago I went to Seneca Rocks with my wife and the trail to the top of that was about 1.7, but all of it was uphill.
