In winter, what do you like to do in the ADKs?

To all - The Adirondacks are filled with magical places. Where do you like to go in the winter months there? What winter activities do you love best in the ADKs?

I love cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, ice skating, tobagganing, sledding, walking, ice fishing, ice boating. How about you? The snow is coming. How do you enjoy the winter weather in the ADKs? - Turq !

Winter in the ADKs . . . am I the only one?

To all - Sad. I am responding to my own thread. Am I the only one out and about in the ADKs in winter? No?

Fine. Then, what are you doin'? - Turq ! I find it hard ta believe that I'm the only one who knows the ADKs in the winter. C'mon, folks!

Turq--I do the same things in the winter as summer: Hike! Of course, winter brings on snowshoes, etc. But I go to the same places and do the same things. I used to enjoy a wider array of activities (downhill skiing, skating, etc.), but for the last 5 years hiking is all I've wanted to do.

Hiking and skiing. I hope the slides open at whiteface this season, so I can get some lift served excitement. Still a bit of a hike though.

Things to do in the winter in the ADKs . . . here's one challenge!

A year ago I read that a person had summited all the 46ers in the winter. I was impressed. They are hard enough to accpmplish in good weather. The person was not a man. A female had scaled these heights. She was not an experienced climber. She was sixteen years old.

There is much to do in the ADKs in the winter. Join us there! - Turq !

Turq, I know a few winter 46ers (I hope to be one someday). Your right that this is really tough.

I have lived in the adk. park my whole life. Icefishing is big; but I have not done that much since I started my winter 46. When you have winter for so long with -40 temps and snow from sept till May you pray for summer. You have downhill, crosscountry skiing, snowmobiling and everyones favorite shoveling snow. A lot of the old time adkers go to Florida in the winter.

I got some hiking boots (cheapy Yakima's at Dikk's Sporting goods) and a new Kelty 5400 pack today . This and the fleece vest/liner means I'm ready!

"A female had scaled these heights"

Turq, A lot of women are now doing the 46 in the winter. I have hiked with a female who has done 5 winter rounds, in all 4 seasons, and the top 100 in NY. I believe there is a book coming out in the next couple of months called "Women of Altitude" published by North country books. It is about four women who have climbed the 46 in the winter.

                        Women Climbing the 46ers

Adk-46r - Thank you! I will look for that read. I am not promoting women, merely pointing out that women do hike and climb. Children climb well also.

I am an educator. I teach and I have a television show. Kids are natural climbers. They have the energy, if you can give them direction to help their attention spans widen. Several of my students and I climbed with EarthTreks last year. Ropes, belay, outdoor climbing, rock and ice climbing. The kids tested out before me . . . really! And . . . I'm experienced !

There is no better feeling than scaling a 46r peak with a child and a female in her twilight years. All appreciate the moment! Nothing like it here on earth. It is what binds the community of hikers and climbers.

We are lucky. We get to meet some great people! my best to you - Turq !

Good Points. My daugther is both (a woman.... well, girl actually, and a climber). She has 37 high peaks and will finish the 46 by next summer.

Oh yeah, she's 10. She'll turn 11 in May. I agree with all your points. She is one hellava climber and has more stamina and drive than many adults I hike with.

MAVS00 Be sure she fnishes them before she is a teen. My daughter would run up the mts. when she was nine. Now at 14 she can't change the channel on the tv without a remote. But she still does do easy ones with me now and then.

                              They are all different........

She'll be done by August. You make very good points, but I don't think it'll apply to her. She is scary physical. She's is a very good athlete (swimmer, one of the best locally in her age bracket) and loves to run with me in the warmer weather (and I prefer training runs of 6+ miles).

she is just one of those kids that is very competitive. when it comes to hiking, she is an animal. She did the Santinonis, Sewards and Dix's no problem (and I found them hard). She hikes with (against) her brother and that seems to bring out the competitive fire within her. She (and her brother, who is 12) will soon out grow thier parents.

when I asked them what how they wanted to celebrate the 46er completion (thinking Disneyworld, Florida or something like that), both of them them did not even hesitate. It's back to Colorado (for a couple 14's). They both have one 14er (Pikes Peak) to thier credit.
