    Hitchens pond ,Low's lake 9-21 to 9-24

21st put out from lower dam with overcast skies . Made camp on Hitchins
pond site #8 . 22nd morning heavy fog over lake and dew on the tents ,
fog burned off about 9:30 just in time for our hike up Low's ridge which
always has great views for little effort . while breaking camp we had a
visit from the Rough Rider himself Ted Roosevelt LMAO ,this fella had a
wide brimed hat, round glasses, bushy mustache a long barreled handgun
strapped to his hip with his pants tucked into knee high boots . He was
a nice fella who said he was in the area to hunt grouse ( handgun was for
hunting bear ) ,we ran into two other fellas later in the trip with sidearms
who were hunting bear . We made our way to Low's lake with nary a ripple,
the water was like a skatin rink and the weather perfect for the rest of the
trip . We made camp at Boone's landing which is a nice site with a real
Adirondack feel to it ,it has a large fairly flat rock that slopes into the the
waters edge with a small beach on either side of it ( no camping june ,july
august ). Are there any plans in the works for an air traffic control tower on
Low's ? We watched 3 float planes land all with in 20 minutes to a half hour
of each other , looks like they taxied over to Grass pond area . Had a visit
from the local Ranger she was puttin up new signs for the thunder box , she
told us there was a pack of coyotes in the area . Have there been any Moose
seen in this area? After Ranger left we were bushwacking for wood
between Boones landing and site #39 came into a boggy area and spyed a
very large mound of scat , called my friend over whos an avid hunter and has
hunted all over the U.S. he said it was Moose without a doubt and looked fairly
fresh ( looked like deer scat just much bigger ) . Star gazing over the lake was
about as good as it gets , Milky way was very apparent ,the rock
on the waters edge was perfect for this we just layed there lookin up for hours
debating satellites versus UFO's lol . The 23rd was another banner day
two of the group headed out to fish and the rest of us set out to hike Grass pond
mountain ,we paddled to site # 23 or 24 can't remember which then
hiked in about 30yrds to that dirt road located on my paddlers map , hung
a left and picked up the flagged trail right after the culvert . Trail is fairly
steep with some wet slippery areas , there is a more gradual path
somewhere but this is more adventurous and fun and not to mention directly
to the top , we were up it in 1/2 an hour and the views were outta site .
We spotted our friends in the canoe fishin who were in a little cove directly
opposite what looks like Silver leaf pond on the map ,they pulled out about
20 large mouth within 1 1/2 hours using top water bait mostly 2 and 3 pounders
and one 5 pounder they were fishing near a downed tree . Two others went to
same spot 3 hours later and only pulled out 2 lol feeding time was over . That night
we heard the coyotes ,sounded like the caught something , two of the
fellas in our group who liked sleepin by fire under the
stars said they heard em right outside our camp about 3 a.m. . 24th took up
and out to the rat race of NYC , another great trip for the books ,enuff said.

Hitchins is only an hour, maybe less, from the put in at the lower dam . To get to the far end of Low's Lake will take about another three hours assuming relatively calm conditions . Best to get on Low's early in the day, as the prevailing winds usually result in headwind if you are trying to get to Grass Pond or the portage to the Oswegatchie.

Yep . That part is also relatively sheltered from wind as well.

I was in that area back in late July with a small group of friends. We didn't camp at Hitchens though. We paddled from the dam all the way to #23 or #24. It is a great place to spend time.

If you heard my pal taking a cr@p in the morning, you'd know. That's him in the "thunder box".

A thunder box is a privy without walls and roof. Just a box with a hole covered by a wide heavy lid which keeps the seat dry. Almost odorless and a major improvement over the traditional privy in my opinion which was reconfirmed about 1 AM this morning at the Bog River.
