    renting a racing kayak or canoe?

    where can I rent a racing kayak or canoe in the Tupper Lake area?

    After doing the raquette river route in 14 hours, and hearing about the "90 miler", I think I got distance racing in my blood.

    I'm looking for something light weight and fast ..... and I'd like to try out a few different styles of boats before I go and buy something, so renting, if possible, would be the way to go I'd think.

    Go see Brian (Mac) at Macscanoe in Lake Clear. Mac is the organizer and MC/host of the 90 Miler. He can set you up with a boat.

    Another choice is Charlie or Joe at Placid Boat Works in Lake Placid, if you might like to solo double-blade paddle a frequent 90 Mile winner in its class (the RapidFire).

    Expect to do the 90 Miler second day, from the start about a mile south of Long Lake village, to the "crusher" boat launch a couple of miles east of Tupper - in about 5 1/2 hours with the faster competitors. Others complete the day a bit slower.

    Got distance racing in your blood? Try the Yukon in the YRQ (Brian and I have both done this one) or better yet the Y1K (looking forward to this new race beginning in 2009).

      Wilderness;

      Thanks for the reference, but Placid boatworks does not rent. St. Regis outfitters in Saranac Lake has a couple RFs for lease.

        Raquette River outfitters in Tupper Lake has a great canoe selection and some kayaks. They are a pleasure to deal with.

          thanks guys! I just came back from Raquette River Outfitters (since they are just a few miles down the lake from me) and they have a solo Bell packboat that I can rent. It's narrow and light enough for what I want to do, i think. I hear that back in the day they used to do this run as a race and 6 1/2 hours was all it took! I will be looking around some more and trying to rent other boats, as I can see that this is something I can really get into. Rent, Demo, then buy something, after I've done my homework, and fieldwork.
