    cheney pond

Looking at the map it looks like there is a .4 mile portage from blue ridge highway to cheney pond. Is that true? I was reading another post and it sounded like you could drive right up to the put in at cheney.

I havent been there for approx. 10 years but back then you could drive right to the pond. The road was a little rough so dont drive your corvette but any vehicle with a little ground clearance could make it with no problems.

Thanks trouthunter, How is the pond for swimming? I read this was kind of a party spot so I am a little skeptical of going there for a quiet weekend.

Swimming at the put in is fair, kinda muddy and weedy. If I remember correctly there is a nice beach area on the opposite side of the pond. I didnt swim there because at the time I didnt have a boat with me. Looked like a nice place to swim though.

Sometimes it is. but not always. If you want solitude, do the little carry over to the Boreas and go down Lester Flow. Camp at the old dam site.

Thanks guys you have been very helpful, one more question.

How about wolf pond farther east down the road on the left? Is there easy access there, it looks like the road stops half way at a dead end. anything you can tell me about getting there and paddling? Thanks!

Well the good thing is if there are people there it shouldn't matter because I will set up my hammock somewhere away from the campsites. Thanks for all the info I appreciate it!!

Hows the fishing in cheney pond?

My brother and I were there approx. 6 years ago or more...we were able to drive right up to the put-in,and yes, the road was a little rough ,just go slow...we trolled around and around and caught no trout, but the bluegills were pretty big and hungry!! Seemed pretty vacant when we were there...and far as ponds go ,it looked alittle weedy to me and not deep enough to hold a good population of trout...probably more like put and take trout...watchout, I remember, the deerflies were prolific and very hungry on the shoreline!!
Good luck if you go and let us know if you hook any trout!!!

You still can easily drive into Cheney, and it is fairly popular. Especially now with the brand new lean-to on the southern sandy beach.
Solitude on the weekend is very unlikely.
There is some good swimming at the beach sites, and off of the rocks on the western shore.
...Didn't catch any fish, but they are in there.

I also hear that Lester Flow is nice.

Thought I would share my experience at cheney over the weekend. I'll start by saying it's a beutiful place. I got there on Friday afternoon. Parking lot was completly full, which I don't mind sharing as long as people are respectful. So I paddled around the pond and caught probably 50 bluegill lol but not a single trout. Still was a good time. All the sites on the beach were full and even some of the shorline. No one was paddling they were all in motorized boats. The dog and I were having a good time, Laying on the shore reading a book watching the sun go down. All of a sudden I hear a chainsaw at about 830pm. The guys staying on the beach were cutting down trees for firewood with an F*ing chainsaw!!! I listened to the chainsaw untill 10:17pm. I was seriously getting ready to pack up and leave I was so pissed off. Anyway I decided to stay and just tried to tune it out. Then for the rest of the night all I heard was yelling and screaming etc... Pretty crappy. So in the morning I got up at about 6am to paddle down lester flow and on the shorline by my canoe was 4 beer cans floating in the water. I picked them up threw them in my canoe and paddled off. I paddled down by the beach where the chainsaw massacre went on and there was about 20 beer cans scattered all over the beach and a naked guy passed out in the middle of the beach. Now don't get me wrong I have been known to pass out naked but I highly doubt they were going to pick up there mess. Listenening to a chainsaw all night along with yelling and finding beer cans floating in the water in the morning totally ruined it for me. Like I said I don't mind sharing and it's a beautiful spot but I definitly will not be going there again.

adk joe - Cheney may have been a beautiful spot when you were there but that was a week ago already.

The more I hear about this behavior the madder I get...is it me or are there more complete slobs around now than in the past ... Thanks for picking up after them...

It is a nice pond, but, unfortunately ,you ran into a bunch of inconsiderate slobs!!!

ADK Joe: I've paddled and camped on Cheney and the Boreas River several times in the past few years and haven't experienced the people you did a few weeks ago. The new lean-to may be the attraction. There is a forest ranger who I've seen on the lake and he is no doubt keeping an eye on the new lean-to. I would encourage you to report what you've seen.
