    Turtle to Clamshell carry

Has anyone tried the Turtle to Clamshell carry lately? I know it was supposed to be in rough shape last year.

Er, scratch that-- DEC says "The canoe carry between Turtle and Clamshell Ponds is closed due to beaver activity which has made the trail unsafe. Use of the trail may result in damage to natural resources as well."

They also say that "The carry between Long Pond and Nellie Pond has a lot of blowdown. <snip> A significant amount of bushwhacking will be needed to get through the carry"

Has anyone tried it lately? How bad is it?

The Adirondack Wilderness ... is a vast natural park, one immense and silent forest, curiously and beautifully broken by the gleaming waters of a myriad of lakes, between which rugged mountain ranges rise as a sea of granite billows. -- Verplanck Colvin

The Turtle/Clamshell carry has been like that for several seasons now .

The Long / Nelly carry info is new however . I would suggest calling St. Regis Canoe Outfitters - they have an outpost just south of Long Pond on Floodwood Road and should know the story.

mwanner, did you find anything out on the nellie carry. I heard it was open earlier this year but I guess there have been some bad storms recently. I'd love to go to fish pond that way.

I also am planning on visiting the area, and am planning on carrying that trail. Do the trails typically get cleared pretty quickly? Or can I expect that the blowdowns noted on the Long Pond to Nellie trail will still be there in August when I plan to go?

        Cheers!

          Long Pond to Nellie Carry

Just did a through trip from Long Pond to Little Clear this past week end, including the carry to Nellie and it was fine--a little muddy in some areas, but no major blow down problems. There is a beaver pond a short distance after the start of the carry that's been there for a while. Altho a ranger said there was now a trail around it, we didn't see it (didn't look all that hard). So you need to paddle across this water. Otherwise trail was fine. Great trip.

The St. Regis River from Ochre to St. Regis Lake was also navigable with 3 (I think) carry over beaver dams, but otherwise fine. Not sure how it'll if we have a dry spell, but as of last week end it was good and saves a carry.

            clamshell to Turtle carry

My son (14 at the time) and I did an extended 9 carries about 4 years ago. We had a long morning trek from the N Fish pond leanto through to the NW Slang camp site. The last portion of the Clamshell to Turtle had to be carried through the woods on the W side of the swamp (fun with a 17 foot Ravenworks foam core canoe). The beaver dam had a break in it and the water was down in the beaver swamp which you would normally paddle through. There was no mention of this on the DEC website and no posting at the trail head at Fish pond or Clamshell pond. BUT, when we were loading up at Turtle pond to head out we looked back and saw a sign that said "trail closed". No kidding.

Other than that, a great trip and a fantastic area to paddle and hike in.
