Oswegatchie--Inlet to High Falls round trip

I am planning a 2 or 3 night round trip from Inlet to High Falls or further in three weeks. I know we won't be trying to reach Low's Lake. My last trip was a quick one day turn around to Griffin Rapids and back. I know about the lean-to locations. Are there "official" camp sites on this trip? Does anyone have comments or recommendations about good or "better" sites?

I have done this trip both as a 2 night and 3 night trip. A 3 night trip will give you a day to paddle above the falls. Generally I spend the first night halfway to the falls, second/third up by the falls. There are several lean-to's up by the falls and they are often occupied (hikers and paddlers). I prefer to stay a little down stream from the falls. There are a number of "official" sites between Inlet and the falls. I would imagine in Sept you will have no problem finding a good site.

Stop by a DEC office and get a copy of "Trails in the Cranberry Lake Region". It shows a rough map depicting the "official" designated campsites. Note that if you choose to camp elsewhere you must by regulation be at least 150 feet from the river or trail. Please observe Leave No Trace.

That is a wonderfull trip that I try to do at least once a year. We usually do 3 nights at the falls but that is just because we make it in to a vacation almost. If we are going to the falls we usually do the paddle in one day but it can be a long day, especially if the water is high/fast moving. One of my favorite campsites is at the foot bridge about 3/4 of the way to the falls. From there you are on the five ponds trail and an easy walk back to the ponds and beautiful sights, also there is a natural spring at that site. The canoeing above the falls is great as is the fishing. I love the area so much that I hate to leave when it is time to go that is why we always end up taking a week to do a 2 night trip!
