    Southern Adk canoe rte

Here's a suggestion for those who enjoy S Adks, long continuous trips, & paddling/carrying those Hornbecks (or other lightwt craft) over long portages. My wife & I did this trip beginning the day after I retired in May in a Royalex Penobscot. It's best done in higher water levels:
Launch into W branch Sacandaga near Arietta. Paddle past Shaker Place ( enjoy optional hiking tour of W branch gorge) Ascend Pisceco Lake outlet, (optional side trip into Spy L) cross Big Bay & Piseco Lake & ascend Fall Stream to Vly lake. Carry to Fawn lake then Sacandaga Lake. Ascend Burnt Place brook to Mud lake, carry to Mossy Vly brook & paddle it into Jessup River. Continue thru Indian lake & into S end Lake Abanakee. Carry to L. Adirondack then Cedar River. Descend it to jct w/ Rock River. Ascend it (tough) then carry 1.7 m to Rock Lake. Mostly carry ( but paddle some) of Upper Rock R into Lake Durant. Easy carry across SR28 into Blue Mt lake. From there the world's your oyster as they say & lotsa options for continuing are available. I'd estimate total trip, Arietta -BML @ about 72m

That sounds like a nice trip Glen. How long did it take you?
Its wise to wear little bells so as not to startle bears and to carry pepper spray. Also know the difference between black and grizzly bear scat. Black bear scat has berries and fur. Grizzly scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray.

      Wow

I'd love to know details such as specific carry locations, etc. Looks like a fun adventure!

This does sound like a good trip. Can you post a map, and I echo the above request for details on specific carry locations. Would a trip like this be possible in the fall or will the water levels be too low?

Sorry. Not techno-savy enough to post a map. Most of rte (except W branch Sacandaga R) appears on Plinth, Quoin, Cornice "Central Mtns" map.
E-mailed you (as I did to Adk Keith) some additional details. Much of the rte is along established paddle trails. The connections between them are where the long & sometimes trailless carries are necessary. Low water would add to their length

Just for future reference. this trip is about 100 miles. I just ran it through a program and it spit out close to the 100 mile mark.
This sounds like a great trip. I'll be retired someday.
Hmmm, I wonder....maybe some fall. Talk about digging up an old thread!!!
If anyone is serious about this trip and needs a map let me know. For a small fee due to time + materials, I will send you a printed map of this entire route. I'll laminate it for a little extra.
This seems like a great canoe/kayak route!!

I might be interested in this, depending on the time of year, availability etc.

How long are the portages? I might rather do this with my brother and a bigger canoe then my Hornbeck.

Rewhawk, the longest portage that I can see is a little over 1.5 miles and that is the portage from the Mud Lake area to Mossy Vly. Followed by the Vly Lake to Fawn lake via hte north side of Vly Lake Mt. Also the best way to get to Blue Mt Lake is to paddle to the pond at that lies to the west of Lake Durant and then portage over to Eagle Lake, then paddle to Blue. This will avoid the fair sized hill that is located between the two. Hope this helps some.
Depending on your GPS I may be able to download a track for the entire trip as well. Of course that could best be performed in person seeing that we don't live too far awway from each other.

My GPS is a Garmin RINO and I have enough software to pretty much be able to handles tracks and routes from any source, National Geographics Topo (preferred), Mapsource, Terrain Navigator, DeLorme's Topo or any of the various export formats.

However you are correct in that we are both in the Southern Dacks. I think you're about an hour and a quarter away from me (Little Falls?). The coffee pot is always on here if you get up Wells way.

Ascending the Rock River must have been real interesting. Especially from the confluence with the Cedar river. Not sure if its above or below this confluence, but there are some class III rapids on the Cedar on the way to the Hudson River.
Ascending Piseco Lake outlet must not have been a cake walk. There are about 6 or 8 class II rapids from the confluence with the West Br. Sac. up to Rt. 10. Then there is another one between Rt. 10 and Rt. 8.
How long did it take to complete the whole route ?
                    cheers

                      Rio,
The OP posted this some 6 months ago. I dug it up from a dormant state. Maybe a PM will get the OP back into this great sounding trip.

Redhawk, any tracks would be in TXF format.

I can import that into Terrain navigator, upload it to the Rino and then download it into National Geographic Topo or any of the other mapping/gps software I have.

Mike (Riosacandaga) is correct. Won't be an easy paddle if at all up Piseco Outlet from the confluence with the West branch. I hike in the gorge all the time and often exit via tha alder swamp trail to route 10 Piseco Outlet is often running very fast. I can remember a couple of times we had to strip and carry our packs to get across, fighting the current trying to take us downstream all the time.

I have Terrain Nav as well and that is where the tracks would come from.
Nice little Program with a bug or two !!!
When you are dealing with a few hunderd tracks and 600 or 700 markers on one map it makes you want to
