I'm planning a Father / Son trip of 6 to 8 people in August, is this route open and what info can anyone provide? We will have 4 kayaks and 1 or 2 canoes, my son and I spent two days on Lake Lila and had a great time.

Ltl -ll
Rte is open, navigable both directions, & shows on Adk Paddlers map although not yet marked (as of 05). There are a number of long carries - tough for kayaks but all wheelable if you're into them. Last 2 trips I avoided the long but interesting carry thru old clearing between LilyPad Pond & Shingle Shanty brook by paddling thru Mud Pond (short carry from camp @ outlet to avoid shallow raps. I also paddle very narrow Hardigan outlet into Salmon L outlet eliminating another carry but it & Little Salmon outlet will be way shallow in August.
Can supply exact trip details if you like but it's more fun for you to discover them for yourself. Enjoy ! -
I've always done the rte as an unencumbered day trip so have no experience w/ few campsites between Lila & LTL. I'd recommend you do the same & thus avoid lugging overnight gear over the long carries. There are great sites on both ends as I'm sure you're aware.
If, by "the area leading to Shanty brook" you mean the lands around Mud Pond & brook's upper reaches that carry avoids, Brandeth Lake Club owns recreational rights there. Thus, as I understand it, they won't be conveyed to NYS as part of TNC's IP purchase. Also, plan on Mud's outlet above Shingle Shanty to be thickly clogged w/ weeds in August.Comment

Little Tupper to Lake Lilah
I've done this trip twice, once the year it first opened and again last year. I feel I must warn you--it's a very rugged route. The trails, especially the whole section between Hardigan Pond and Shingle Shanty are somewhat marked, but not cut or cleared and in many places are extremely overgrown, very rough, and sometimes tough to follow. When I did it the second time, I assumed that the trails would have been worn in by then by usage over the 4-5 years they've been open and therefore they'd be easier to follow, but that wasn't the case. I've done a fair amount of Adirondack Paddling and carrying, and I can say with no hesitation that the two days (one on each trip) that I spent going from Little Tupper to Shingle shanty/Lilah were the two most rugged days of any I've spent in the Adirondacks. So if that's the trip you definitely want to do, then be prepared for some tough carrying.
Also, I only recall one officuial campsite (I'd have to double check the map to let you know where it was exactly--let me know if you want to know that) which wasn't a particularly appetizing one.
Good luck!
