Bog River Question

The great eagle pics posted by fvrwld have motivated me to make a day trip on the Bog River. Unfortunately, time constraints don't allow for a longer exploration. The plan is to launch at the lower dam and paddle to the Upper Dam. I'd like to include a hike to the ridge from the Upper Dam to enjoy the views. Can anyone offer any info on the best take-out site, and also how to find the trail/path? up to the cliffs. Also how long and steep is the climb?

It's too bad you won't have time to see Low's lake but after experiencing the river between dams, am sure you'll schedule a return trip. The river's scenic imm above lower dam & thru Hitchin's Pond but more expansive views from Low's.
The trail to cliffs above Hitchins is now cut out & marked (red, if I recall correctly) You can either land @ picnic area marked w/ brown/gold DEC sign where spillway over dam enters Hichins @ it's SW end, or paddle up spillway & takeout on rt, by register. Walk to left (N) past lodge remains & cross rd that crosses over upper dam. It's gated to rt. Trail to clifftop begins imm behind an old foundation of now removed bldg approx 50 yds N of dam. Can't recall if you have to pass gate on rt to find trailhead or not. Regardless,you'll have no problem finding it. Think there's also a cairn @ start. Trail switchbacks so not steep. Maybe 20 min to ridgetop which you can walk along for differing views. Bring a camera ! If you enjoy this view be sure on your return trip to climb the ridge on Grass Pond Mt from near site #25 on Low's. Enjoy.

We were finally able to get in our Bog River trip last Friday. (thought we'd never get a day without rain). It was an incredible day, with bright blue skies and cool, crisp temps. We started from the Lower Dam and paddled leisurely, enjoying the wilderness feel to the area. From the Upper Dam we climbed the ridge and enjoyed unlimited views. Returning to the picnic area, it was time for lunch and a hot drink, before returning to the water to play water tag with a young loon. He was a real character, and seemed to have little fear of the kayaks. In fact, one time he surfaced so close to my companion she had to reach for her paddle instead of the camera to avoid running into him. We also saw an eagle soaring above us. Because of all the recent rain the water coming over the dams and also at Bog River Falls was quite impressive. All in all, a great day... probably the last paddle until next year. Thanks again to Glen for the info, it was right on and very helpful.
