    Absurdity

    Well...
I decided to go fishing yesterday.
The river was flowing good and the temps were a toasty 12 when I started.
Figured I better get out there while it was still warm.

I happily take back everything I said about the fish slowing down.

Here's the part that you don't have to believe:
First cast... 18" female, and the fattest one I've caught this year.
I released her and sat down to smoke a cigarette, perhaps to calm myself.

Second cast... a bigger, stronger fish, which broke me off.
My reel freezes up in these temps, until I'm able to make a few casts and get it moving. Lost the fish when it shot into some fast water, and I had no line to give. I even thought about that before I made the cast, and was hoping I didn't hook a fish!

By this time I could have been heard muttering out-loud to myself... something about "WOW" and "Holy ****". So I proceed to tie on the same rig which I had just lost... Wooley bugger in rust/orange tail, w/strips of green/blue flash and a Hare's Ear dropper. (both fish had hit the barbless bugger).

I wade back out, and the silly "What If..." question pops into my useless head.
    Third cast... BAM!

Thought about going home at this point, but rejected the idea as "Too Zen".
Afterall, it took me longer to put my waders on.

    One more cast...

I was almost relieved to finally attain a full drift. It was nice to see and I usually get the strikes near the end of the drift. No fish. Whew!

    Fifth cast... BAM!

Now, you don't have to believe this.
I hardly believe it myself. It seemed like a dream.
There's little I can do about that.

    10-15 casts later... BAM!

    Absurd indeed!

Last time I was there a friend was going to meet me. So I fished for 15 minutes and popped a couple nice fish. My friend showed up so I backed out of the riffle I was fishing to talk to him. He needed some splitshot so I gave him some splitshot. As he put it on, I was half-heartedly drifting a bugger through the spot I was just standing in. Whammo, big yellow sided brown smacked it. I was so suprised that I didn't set the hook well and the fish threw it. Sick stuff in that river, sick stuff.

I'm glad that you too are enjoying the sick-absurdity.

Just wanted to let you know that my prevoius post regarding the slow-down was a false-alarm.

Hell... I thought they were gonna slow down a month and a half ago!

      Get out there and fish!
But watch out... I've NEVER seen my fly-line freeze like it did yesterday.
Temps went from 12 to 7 in less than an hour, yet I was surprisingly warm...
      for a little while.

The ice formed on the line and leader (in very strange shapes) before it could even touch the guides...
which remained surprisingly clear of ice.

Also... the best ice formations on shore that I have seen this year.

Let's not take the fish out of the water, to release them...
I think that their gills will flash-freeze.

        Ask sacco...

One day I wanted him to catch a monster fish quickly, to get it out of his system...
        ...err... vanquish performance anxiety...
I said, stand there... take out 4-5 feet of flyline... toss it over there.

Hey was so surprised on the first cast, that he wasn't ready, and lost the fish!

        Ha-Ha on Scott!

well, for those curious or following along here- we didn't do so hot yesterday.

after fishing for about 4 hours we each nabbed one respectable fish. tough fighters w/ strong shoulders, but lacking the belly the previous weeks of fishing had.

wonder if the winter is starting to thin them down a bit?

an hour later serotonin got 1 last fish shortly before dark.

another guy there had a little better luck. he caught 5 throughout the day.

all fish by all persons were caught on woolly buggers- other options were tried and refused.

Yeh Serotonin PM'd me whining something about you being a jinx.

I told him he should beware of any fisherman who can use sneakers for waders!!

I guess that I'll have to perform the exorcism myself...
Fishing w/Scott is almost as good as catching fish.
                        This weekend?

Hawk, are you suggesting that you were gonna wet-wade the other day?
That woulda been the end of your fishing career.
When we were done, our waders were standing up on their own...

The expensive billet-machined-aluminum reel on my 5 weight has been freezin' up like -------–"enter your own similie"----------.

I moved to my short 4 weight (too small for this river), because the reel is made of composite material... no metal to freeze.

Whoa! A five pound Brown feels alot different!
                              Immediately.
(The largest fish that rod/reel has ever landed).

                              Had a great day!
