Well...
I decided to go fishing yesterday.
The river was flowing good and the temps were a toasty 12 when I started.
Figured I better get out there while it was still warm.
I happily take back everything I said about the fish slowing down.
Here's the part that you don't have to believe:
First cast... 18" female, and the fattest one I've caught this year.
I released her and sat down to smoke a cigarette, perhaps to calm myself.
Second cast... a bigger, stronger fish, which broke me off.
My reel freezes up in these temps, until I'm able to make a few casts and get it moving. Lost the fish when it shot into some fast water, and I had no line to give. I even thought about that before I made the cast, and was hoping I didn't hook a fish!
By this time I could have been heard muttering out-loud to myself... something about "WOW" and "Holy ****". So I proceed to tie on the same rig which I had just lost... Wooley bugger in rust/orange tail, w/strips of green/blue flash and a Hare's Ear dropper. (both fish had hit the barbless bugger).
I wade back out, and the silly "What If..." question pops into my useless head.
Third cast... BAM!
Thought about going home at this point, but rejected the idea as "Too Zen".
Afterall, it took me longer to put my waders on.
One more cast...
I was almost relieved to finally attain a full drift. It was nice to see and I usually get the strikes near the end of the drift. No fish. Whew!
Fifth cast... BAM!
Now, you don't have to believe this.
I hardly believe it myself. It seemed like a dream.
There's little I can do about that.
10-15 casts later... BAM!
