    More pond fishing

Today my boys and I got up at 5, loaded up the canoe and headed out. We stopped to pick up sandwiches which we figured out an hour later we had paid for but left sitting on the counter. That made for a grumpy start. So did dropping my ultra heavy canoe on my leg while trying to set it down gently at the end of the portage trail. Blame that mis-placed tree I couldn't see

We hadn't been 20 feet when my nine year old hooked a big brookie which doubled under the canoe and broke him off. We tied on an identical fly and he quickly lost another. My twelve year old had a beauty up to the canoe and we lost that one, too. At that point, we were really grumpy with one another. Then Thomas hooked a nice female, which we managed to land. Then Ross got one. Then I got the big alpha male. Then Thomas... and on and on and on it went. We were all smiles and happy boys from then out. It was a cold day out but the brookies are finally active and up at the surface. If you have a favorite pond, get out while the gettin's good

Great report. Great pics. Great ending. I guess it's better to have a bad start and a good ending than vice versa.

Looks like everything turned out good. I love it when you catch fish right from the start. I can only imagine how much skill your boys are gonna have flyfishing later in life.

I'm back into the ponds on Monday by myself for a good 3 day crack at the end of the season. One of the brookies we lost last weekend was truly enormous. I've been thinking about that fish all week
