Where did we go wrong ?

I see that a thread concerning a first time gun owner (and his son) was looking for advice and input from the hunters here. The subject turned towards ethics and opinions were expressed regarding that. At no time (that I saw) were any illegal activities discussed . No anti- gun or anti- hunting opinions were expressed. Just opinions as to what most hunters feel is moraly and ethicly correct , they try to hold themselves to a higher standard than "just the bare minimum of what the law allows" , No diferent than hikers that try to avoid mud season , or trout fishermen that stay off the water in late summer because the fish are stressed from low water.
I re-read the "no tolerance" rule for this section of the forum , and see no reason why said thread was deleted
I also understand the owners haveing the final say , and right to delete offensive threads , but I don't think this had crossed that line.
I hope that in the future we, in the hunting and fishing section , have the ability to discuss our morals and ethics , especially with new commers to our sports so as to help instill those important values that a new commer may not have been exposed to .

Somebody was looking to make trouble, not looking for info.

I guess you guys are right , I hate seeing threads deleted instead of just locked . There were several good posts on that thread that covered firearm saftey and ethics above and beyond what the law calls for. A locked thread can still be called up in the search function and most folks can seperate the wheat from the chaff. A deleted thread is just gone.

Is it possible that the thread starter deleted it and not a moderator?

A moderator locked it and then I archived it.

I thought it was a terrible thread. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry so I sighed and let my shoulders sag.

This forum is capable of a much higher level of discourse.

Carry on! Start up a new thread if you would like to.

The decision to delete or archive a thread is based on a simple question. Do I really want people to see that? A locked thread attracts attention to it.

I don't know how my participation was viewed, but I read the last post by the originator before its disappearance and it is much better that it rests in peace!

Totally. After more then 5 years in the forum business, we (all us moderators/owners/members) end up getting a knack for legitimate topics for discussion and what amounts to "troll baiting" crap. A moderator used a judgement call, and I've actually gone back and read the thread from front to end, and guess what? That moderator was 100% correct to do so. Neil was also right to tuck it away.

We can all do better then than. Next time we see something like that, we all must remember to:

Just to add a note for the future. If something disappears, it generally does for a reason, and you are always welcome to ask one of the moderators about it. Just do it via PM, so as not to clutter the forums. Thanks and carry on.
