    Fishfinder Overkill??

Looking to put a fish-finder on a 16' Starcraft alum. and I'm wondering what's really needed. My last one was a Humminbird 525 and I bought it without much research. I was happy with it but wanted to learn more for my next buy. It looks like there are main differences between the peak-to-peak power (800 watts to 2400 watts depending on units) - what does this mean?

    Fishfinder

I just got another Eagle Magna portable on ebay to replace the one that I've used for years on 12 & 14' aluminum boats. This is not the world's greatest unit, but it is serviceable and I figure I can use parts from the old one (head gradually died & you can't service them) on the new(er) one. If I hadn't found this I figured I would wait for the spring sales at places like Dick's & Gander Mtn. to pick up another one. I use mine mainly for trolling for trout & this unit has the portable suction cup transducer and runs on 2 12 volt lantern batteries; some newer models use D cells. I'm not sure about the specs but I bought the first one back in '92 and it worked for years through repeated soakings. It is easy to carry in my tackle bag and I can set it up in a few seconds. The main things I want to know are depth of water and depth of individual fish, and this unit has been good about i.d.'ing & tracking these consistently.
