    Summer Splake

OK...I've tried everything and now I'm curious what I should I retry??? How does one catch splake in the summer? I catch splake in the winter using tip ups and live minnows. I catch splake after ice out using a Lake Clear Wabbler and Mickey Finn or Hornberg streamer in the early morning usually in 20' or less of water. I have some luck in the Fall....but in the summer I get so frustrated!!! Last year, I thought I had it....flat lined my streamer back 150' or more..then attached to downrigger...trolled slowly...when marked fish..readjusted downrigger to just above the depth I marked them...when streamer came through it would be in the zone. It worked...but not with great success. Although I have two quality fish finders on my boat, I really have trouble finding splake in the summer. From winter experience, I would assume they are in schools...usually get several flags in a short period of time....then might as well go to sleep. Anyway...is there a proven technique out there used to catch splake in the summer? Thanks.

Find the fish, then try vertical jigging. Various colors of bucktails and twisters. Good luck.

Not my bag but I know people have success stillfishing live minnows over the deep parts of the lake.

I've had limited success with buggers and hex nymphs early morning and dusk in 20-30 ft. of water.

Don't forget that splake have brook trout genetics and therefore prefer proximity to structure and shallow water even in summer.

I'm not aware of any splake waters that allow using live bait.

          splake

Have you tried fairly large brightly colored spoons and spinners at night? A lake clear with a worm would be a good option also. I have had some luck on lakers and brook trout at night in the summer time. The fish will usually move shallower at night.
