Hunter charged with assault after shooting brother

(Brasher, NY - AP) — A man was charged with assault after he accidentally shot his brother while they were hunting in northern New York.

The accident happened early Sunday in the Saint Lawrence County town of Brasher, 150 miles north of Albany. State Police say 55-year-old Carl Zender of Massena was heading into the woods with his brother, 54-year-old Thomas Zender of Norfolk.

The younger man apparently was unfamiliar with the bolt-action rifle he was carrying and discharged a round into his brother's arm. Carl Zender was listed in guarded condition at a hospital in Burlington, Vermont.

Thomas Zender was arraigned on an assault charge and released to reappear at a later date.

What a shame. The younger brother should NEVER be hunting with a weapon he is not fully familiar with though.
