Above Nobleboro you might get into some brookies. I did anyway a few years ago, but I've mostly fished it downstream of Trenton Falls. Now that fall is almost here there should be fewer tubers and hooligans . The West Canada is a dandy when the goofs are gone.
I have fished way up the West Canada, by the Beldin and Indian. I flyfish only but my buddy killed the brookies on worms. The "creek" changes from shallow to waist deep with every turn past the mud gate. If I were a true trout prospector I'd......Well Id try to push as far up stream as you can. Its all brookies and they love worms.
I'd be curous to know how you do, I've fished West Canada at the Nobleboro birdge, the bridge at Wilmurt, several spots on dirt road just before the Nobleboro Bridge and have taken a canoe south of bridge on Fayle Road... no brookies at any of them and this has been in the spring, when I would think it would be your best chance to land some. From people I've talked to, there is supposed to be a good spot for brookies off the dirt road just before the Nobleboro bridge, go a couple miles up that road and there is a steep right hand turn that has access to several campsites on the creek's edge.
Well, even though I love this part of the West Canada, I have been unimpressed with the trout population.
Generally better in wetter years. You'll find that water is low and prospecting easy (fording) but unproductive. Good Luck, you'll have fun in anycase.
Last year gate was closed, not sure this year. You need a good 4awd to get up to Honnedaga and Metcalf.

I thought all that land was private adk league club land? Is access allowed?
I cherish the outdoors. Its the adventure, the unknown, and the call of the wild that gives me its thrill, passion, and deepest respect.
Ive been 11 miles up that road Its state land up to the Miller park association gate. I heard from the local ranger that the mud gate is now to be permanently closed unless you have a camp up there. The fishing gets better the further up you go.
Fish this spot for a while you may find a Brown or two.
That's too bad about the mud gate... I used to go up that way every year or so. Last June '06 there was a major flood on that river and I cannot imagine native trout or insect life recovering for a few years. You can still see the stick on the rt8 bridge support from last years water level. I wonder if the mud gate is perm. because of road damage from flooding June '06?
Brookie fishing is really hit and miss but always caught something up there...
Does anyone know the official rationale for this road closure?
This ROAD has and is maintained by the NYSDEC. The gate is now locked year round except for some camp owners. Just today, we ran into one of the supposed "landowners" who had a key. He was very rude to us at the gate. He said he was going to go to the falls using his key.. not even to his LAND.
What is the status of this road. I used to work for the DEC in the 90's, and have done a lot over the years. I am trying to scratch my head and think of a similar situation: a state owned road on forest preserve land that is open and maintained for some and not for others. This seems exclusive to me.
