Monster Northern Pike

Check out this monster northern pike. A friend of mine sent this pic to me, not sure where it came from. Somewhere in NY.

He caught a 36 inch pike and this Monster 55 lb pike ate that one near the boat. He did not hook it, but it would not let go!!!!

I'm not sure he was "trying" anything, and if it's not "real"....where's the facts? Snopes...?

We all know that the internet has it's fakes, but at least when busting the "myth", give some info!

That's a big fish. I'd want to shoot it in the head before bringing it on board.


I once was painting a boathouse when a huge Musky swam by. It swam slowly along the surface and had a hook in its mouth. I grabbed a paddle and, from the dock, smacked it hard over the head. It disappeared and then came to the surface, on its back, churning the water big time until it died. It was big. I brought it into my boat and drove to town (Kenora, Ontario) to the fish market docks where we weighed it. I had a brainwave and called the local paper, The Kenora Miner and News. A reporter came down to the docks right away with a big camera (like you saw Clark Kent use in very old superman comics). He was very excited and asked me quite a few questions. I BS'd all the way about how I dropped my paintbrush and grabbed a rod and reel and landed the musky.

The next day my mother was grocery shopping when the store manager runs up to her with the daily paper. There I was, taking up most of the front page with my stupid fish. The reporter had taken my little story and woven it into a major epic of angling lore.

We had a lot of fun with that. It was in 1973.

Pike on the fly

This is the first pike I ever caught(June 1999)...and it was on a 5wt and fly. The scar on the belly was from a snagging hook (that I removed). The fish rolled in the middle of the pic... I also have a cool scar on my thumb from where the gill plate sliced it wide open.

I still fish for pike on the fly. It's too much fun!

I had pretty much the same thing happen to me on a much smaller scale. My son and i were worm fishing for bullhead on the Black River when he hooked something which later turned out to be a 10 inch pickerel. The line just took off in a swoosh. A 40 inch northern had grabbed the fish and fought all the way in. I hopped in the water and scooped it on shore, the pickerel still in his mouth but the big guy was never hooked. Today he sits mounted on the wall in my den with a plaque to "Great Greedy". I should have had the pickerel mounted in his mouth too.

Back in the early 90's my father and I were fishing in the Saranac by Fish Creek campgrounds. We were trolling and my father caught a decent size perch. Right when he got it to the boat a HUGE Northern came and grabbed it and took off. I got the net out and my father got it to the boat 2 more times. On the third time I grabbed the net and only the head would fit into the net. I could not grab the fish with my hands and he finally let go of the perch. The amazing thing was is I had the Pikes head out of the water and he was not going to let go of that perch. I was about 17 years old when this happened. You bet if this happened today I would have jumped in and wrangled the big monster
