Just got back from fishing my favorite stream today before it closes next friday.Arrived early so I started where I normally do and fished my way down to my favorite (often productive hole)Hooked a few nice trout(rainbow and brown around 12-13")and just as I was arriving quietly and casting my woolly bugger upstream to slide into the hole a big wind came up and a gazillion oak leaves rained down onto the water.Whats this?I asked myself, its been along time since this old obstacle occurred.I continued to fish despite a 80% hookup with the oakfish flotillas that floated down. After awhile I tried dodging and aiming my casts to holes in the floating leave mattress.Sometimes it worked. But,just as I was getting a good drift a subsurface oakfish would attach itself to the fly causing this angler to react as if it was a real trout.Boy,flyfishing can be really tough as it is without adding more problems.Anybody else go out in this leave shower today?.
I did manage to find a location on the river I usually don`t fish much, where the current zips by a cliffy outcrop and trout can lay on the seam, with great luck I hooked and released a beautiful 16"rainbow and a smaller natural brown around 14".Adding to the leaf problem was a lower than expected river.
So,to sum it up,not a bad day, just alot of improvising and hooking and releasing hundreds of the dreaded leaffish.Maybe we can make a sport of this. No,bad idea.Well, goodluck whomever gets out and hope the winds die down for you.
Get out and enjoy the fall weather! Tighlines, wildbrookies
