I know you really need to be careful of what you share, or ask, on any forum, but it is kind of wrong when folks shoot someone's question down right from the start. Especially when it's a perfectly, normal, inquisitve, legal, and interesting question that would help a fellow lover of the enjoyment that the ADKS provide.


From my experience, the best way to find out about an area, is to go there. Find out for yourself, and most of the time you come home with an experience that you cain't wait to tell about, but don't want to tell everyone about.

My apologies to BP. I misunderstood your reponse. I thought you were giving me a hard time about asking about the WC on this forum, as if it was a small fragile stream or something. It's an hour drive for me and was just wondering if it was fishing well.

Some of the posts have probably peaked more interest by throwing a shroud of mystique over the WC. The truth is this river has not been fishing very well this season.

It's been very fickle, hatches have been inconsistent, and when the hatch is on it does not mean the fish are on. The floods damaged many pools in the river, impacted some of the entomology, & the power company controlling the flow has no consideratoin for the fishery or fisherman. I'm not saying you won't have some good days fishing on the WC... but it's the guys that are putting in their time, effort, & doing their homework that are having consistent success.

What's all this nonsensical bickering over the West Canada Creek...? Someone asked about fishing conditions....so, if your fishing it, just tell it like it is.......

If you want to fish the real WCC, throw your pack on, bring plenty of bug dope, and head into Mud Lake at the headwaters of the creek. This time of year you'll be eaten alive, but the cover over the stream makes it ideal for the rustic trout angler. Water temp. up there probably 10 degrees cooler than to the open west.

I wouldn't worry none about flooding conditions, power companies, or too many anglers..... It's just you, God and nature...period. And I'd be happy to tell you where my favorite spot is.... good luck finding it is all I can say.

Beaverpond & I went off topic on a general discussion about how the internet effects fishing. Later, the thread was edited, so things are out of context & LOOKS like it was all about WCC.

Ps- just don't venture onto the Adk League Club, an employee & 2 ECOs were watching a group of fishermen with binoculars for 2 days, 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, the anglers didn't trespass.

A friend and I are planning to bush wack from Spruce Lake over to the West Canada, to explore the fishing in that area.

Love It

I love fishing the upper WC and its tributaries. I have not ventured up into the ALC territory for fear of getting ambushed by their groundskeepers.

I have never fished it below Hinckley. From what I have read, it is a completely different 'creek'

More West Canada

As a kid back in the 50's I fished every inch of the West Canada from Middleville to Herkimer. Unfortunately some of the best stretches were the same ones they eliminated when they rerouted Rt 28 years ago. Such places as "The Dugway" and "Dempster Bridge" no longer exist in the interest of taking some curves out of Rt 28. In the process they also took all the big boulders out of the stream in many places, creating just a smooth riffle with no eddys, etc. Ah......the price we pay for progress.
