    Pillsbury Trailhead?

Does anyone know if the road to Sled Harbor / Perkins Clearing is open? I spoke to the ranger last week, and he seemed to think it would be a while before the road crew got in there and opened the road. I'm coming up tomorrow, and wondering if we'll be able to get to the trailhead...

I'm taking a ride up to Indian lake in a couple of hours. I'll see if the road is open at route 30. I can't drive up that road with the Saturn. I'll post when I get back, should be sometime around noon.

I've never found that road to be closed the first week in May. Strongly recommend a 4x4, but I've done it several times without. Mason Lake might flood the road down back, depending on ice out date...
          Call:
Tom Eaken...ENCON, located in Indian Lake. (1-518-548-4132)
Greg George...Forest Ranger located in Blue Mountain Lake (1-518-352-7676)

I've found them both to be valuable sources of information...

Wow...that's a first from all my years of packing from Sled Harbor. Must be considerable blowdown and flooding for that road to still be closed at this late date.

We've had a lot of late meltdown as wel as rain so i suspect that the biggest problem is washout.

I would tell Moses to call those numbers you posted towards the end of the week and see if there is any change.

Thanks!! I spoke to Tom Eagan earlier this week.

I guess we'll go somewhere else. Maybe we'll try the Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area. I've never been there.

May 13th and that road is still closed...... Something's up...!

That's a prime access point to connect with the Northville Placid Trail, in addition to Pillsbury Lake lookout tower, Pillsbury Lake, Whitney Lake, Sampson Lake, Cedar Lake, etc., etc...

I believe that tract of land belongs to Finch, Pruyn & Company.

The paper mill in Glenns Falls, as well as 161,000 prime Adirondack acres..... are now on the selling block.

Are there possibly terms associated with the "Land Exchange Agreement" that took place over 20 years ago...which have now been invalidated due to the pending sale of the tract...? What I mean is....that access road is a key access point for that region, (Lumber, tourism, outdoorsman, packers, yadda, yadda,) and always one of, if not the first... to be cleared and prepared for access. So, why aren't clean up crews in there...if that be the case...?????

Hawk.... are we talking the same language here...? Are we talking the road just past Mason Lake on Route 30 heading north...?

What's up with that...? Something major had to happen in there for that road to still be closed...

Yep, both ends are closed, the end North of mason lake and the end North of Speculator. Gate was across and big closed sign was hanging.

Spoke with a friend today who has a camp back there and he said it should be open today or tomorrow.

There is nothing wrong, I have been back there when the gates were up and what they do is rake the roads with a huge rake and it’s also to let them dry up from all the spring run off. It’s basically to keep the roads in good condition and to prevent them from getting bad like they used to be.

I would still call and check, because I dont want anyone traveling far on my behalf and find that they are still closed.

FP won't remove "MudLocks" from their roads until they are pretty dry. Alot of it has to do with the frost under the top level of soil melting so the surface water has somewhere to go. I've found that that happens when the hardwoods start to open up a bit, they also drawing moisture from the soil. How many of you have dragged a York Rake thru a soft spot?Terrible bad mess getting stuck when the black flys are about....

Check FinchPryun.com for updates on their roads, under Lessee news, under forests...
