Sadly, forums in general seem to be losing participation to social media. I don't get it, these are much more engaging.

Our crew spent the Northern Zone muzzleloading weekend checking out a few areas that have been quiet in recent years because of the gypsy moths. We didn't see much but consider it a good thing that the oaks have recovered, even if they didn't have acorns.

Opening day of rifle was rained out. We hunted Sunday and one of the guys missed a good buck. It just blew though a small clearing and was gone. The brush is quite thick. Hunting Saturday, then off to Maine for a week hoping for a heavy buck.

Headed to camp in Perkins Clearing 2nd week of November . Looking forward to it as last two years life events have kept me away. This will be early as normally hunt Thanksgiving week or week after. Not sure if best idea as peak bowhunting time is that week back home but something about hunt the big woods of the Adirondacks and staying in camp with good friends will be better then bowhunting alone at home.

Friday we took the (3) hour ride and went up to our campsite to check things out for ourselves /// There was a good size tree down right in our site so we got the chainsaw out and made quick work of it /// What really surprised us was how "dry" it was up there considering all the rain we've had all summer /// We have to drive (13) miles into the backcountry over a single lane logging road to get to our camp and we didn't see as much as a puddle of water ///

The underbrush going in was thick making visibility piss poor /// We need frost and rain up there to get those leaves down /// The Forest Ranger called me the other day and told me the upper canopy up there was clear of leaves but we didn't see it that way ///

A backpacker (hunter) came out as we were leaving camp /// He was in the backcountry for (9) days and never saw a flag /// He said he fished the Jessup River a little but no trout to be had /// All he saw were red squirrels and partridge but the coyote's were entertaining at night ///

We cleaned up our campsite in t-shirts cause it was 67 degrees which sucks - but a cold spell is supposed to come in up there come Wednesday /// However I just checked the national weather service and right now it's a mix of snow and rain in Indian Lake with temps in the mid 30's /// You can never tell what to expect weather wise up there ///

I’ve noticed the same thing (lack of posts) and have to check a few other sites for updated info. Hopefully headed up on Wednesday. Looks like cold and rain for the next few days up there so hopefully the underbrush drops some leaves. Good luck everyone, and be safe in the backcountry.

The chase phase of the rut should be ramping up this week. So that should have deer up on their feet during daylight hours. Took a 16 year old young man hunting this past weekend, his dad does not hunt nor does any other family members. He shot his 1st deer a 6 pt., just before dark yesterday. I think he is hooked for life, to say he was excited would be an understatement.

Geogymn, I’ve taken this young man hunting a few times in past seasons. So yes I was happy for sure, tough enough for an seasoned hunter to take a buck in the big woods of the Core of Tug Hill. So finally setting him up to have a shot opportunity was gratifying. But he definitely was happier, his Dad texted me after he pick him up from my home, and said His son talked steady about the hunt all the way home.

Our crew has gotten two ADK bucks so far this year; a 4 and a 6. Not seeing a ton of buck sign. A few of us missed some time as we hunted in Maine for a week, and now a lot of guys are in the Southern Zone. Some years the last two weeks is the best so I intend to keep at it.

Glad to see some folks are having some success. Our annual pilgrimage to Tupper Lake for a week of hunting was successful. Two 8 pointers taken and another good deer seen but no shot offered. Didn't see a whole lotta buck sign in the woods at all. We have some folks like myself that like to cover ground 6-7 miles a day and we only saw a handful of rubs and even less scrapes during the week. Even though we didn't find much sign one of the oldest and youngest members of the group where able to connect with deer. One of the senior members got a nice 8 the day after his 70th birthday. The next day my son got his first Adirondack buck!! Great to see both the older and younger generation share in the good times, rekindling the old and firing up the new for future seasons!! Good luck to all
