  • 2023 Ice Out Canoe Camping And Fishing Trip

Just got home yesterday from a much needed 7 days in the Adirondacks doing some canoe camping with some great friends. We went out in search of Brook Trout, and did find a few, but really it was about just getting back out there and enjoying some much needed paddling on an empty lake. We spent the first night on Raquette Lake, and then jetted over to a sweet little Brook Trout lake nearby to spend the rest of the week, which was definitely the right decision considering some of the wind we got. I still cannot believe the weather changes we went through. Sun, snow, wind, rain, and hail. Everything you come to expect in April while in the Adirondacks. All in all I would call it a success, looking forward to many more trips like this!

Oh it was a blast! I can't wait to get the full video put out.

I actually forgot to mention one of the most interesting parts of my trip! That Brookie from the pictures that ended up in the pan had a stomach full of tiny Perch minnows! I was expecting him to be full of either insects or larvae, but definitely not Perch! 2 of the minnows looked very recently eaten with the third looking like it had been digested for a day or two.

Are you sure they were perch and not something else like a central mudminnow. Perch are the death of a trout pond...

There are definitely full size Perch in there, and they were definitely Perch minnows in the Trout's stomach. From what I understand they have actually been in there a really long time(20+ years), the DEC has tried to reclaim it a few times. I think they keep getting back in, but I still catch a really fair number of Brookies here. I don't want to completely give the place away, but I think a few guys here know where I was and know the fishery history better.
