  • 2023 Ice Out Predictions?

With how mild the winter was at first I was hopeful I would be able to get the canoe on the water early, but the way things have been the last few weeks I am starting to wonder. Any predictions?

Pretty hard to predict at this point. The warm weather could come sooner or later. Much depends on the intensity of the warm weather when it does come. I'll make my prediction in a couple of weeks. What's your prediction Dax?

I predict ice out will occur on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid on April 18th this year. This is a Lake with long historical records of ice in and ice out. Without a frame of reference like this there is no way to confirm because ice out will vary all over the Adirondacks due to elevation, snow depth, etc.

Last year I got out on my first real canoe trip of the year to St Regis Canoe Area on April 9th, and all the ice was definitely completely gone on the ponds. I think we had quite a bit of warm weather leading up to that though.

April 9th would be nice. Recent snow has really piled up which will insulate the ice.

Just read on another forum that there is about 12 inches of ice plus deep snow near Rollins Pond. That will last awhile.

Well, at least I will get lots of practice learning to cast a fly this year on streams before the ponds open up.

Average temps have been well below freezing most of Feb and early March. I'll say 4/26 assuming we dont have a crazy heat wave.

From what I've read on the ice fishing sites, I don't think the ice thickness in most places is as thick as usual. The recent snowfall may insulate it some, but overall the snowpack is less than the norm.

7th lake yesterday. Had to don snowshoes to get the shanty out. Getting way too old - trek back was even worse. Ice out? There was about 3” of suspect slushy ice under the snow - but at least 10” of solid ice under that. With the sun higher in the sky, longer days, and warming temperatures... it can go fast

Several engineer friends and I once built a model to predict the cinderblock-through-the-ice day on Joe's Pond in VT (look it up). We incorporated season snowfall, mean winter temperature, ice-in date and a number of other factors. Our model was terrible and we never even came close to winning the prize. From that I conclude that a few sunny days after the ice goes dark will do it...

Anyone have any info how the Saratoga lake area is ice wise? I’m looking to do a overnight paddling trip the first weekend of April.

I see 55-60 degree temps all week in that area. Will there still be tons of ice in a few weeks there? Or melted enough to navigate to a campsite?
