    Trout in August????

Okay, I have to admit, this is a new one to me. I usually only fish trout in the spring and fall, but this canoe trip I'm going on is supposed to take us to some great trout/LLSalmon waters. We'll be going over ponds like Follensby Clear Pond, Fish Creek, Polliwog Pond, Green Pond, Hoel Pond, Upper Saranac Lake, and maybe Whey Pond. I know the adage is to go deep this time of year, or find a spring inlet, but how do you fish for the various trout and salmon? Trolling over the deep holes best, or do you drift jig through them. Baitfish are not allowed on any of these ponds, so, what about tipping lures with a chunk of worm? What's the best lure? Spoons? Inline spinners? Rat'l Traps? Jerkbaits? I basically have no idea how to catch these fish, this time of year, from a canoe. Oh, and if anyone knows of any sweet spots (that they're willing to cough up) on any of these ponds, those would be appreciated too. We'll be doing catch and release for the most part, so we wouldn't deplete the area.
How is it that you are heading west? Well, we face north and then really sudden like turn left.

Dunno. Maybe, you can buy a cheap/borrow an LCR to find the average depth of where most fish are located and experiment accordingly. Don't think the boys will be into finesse fishing and you may be doing some untangling . Used to fish Polliwog a looong time ago....for a different species then there is now.

Almost looks like you've got experimenting in mind anyhoo.

I've fished all of the POnds you mention with the exception of Hoel, and had success in early September with splakes at Green Pond right in the area by the portage to Follensby Clear. We were getting them I would guess in about 25 feet of water, but saw a lot rises in that area for what was a damsel fly hatch. Would say Whey would be a good choice, don't expect action to be furious, but have caught rainbows in there during July. As far as what baits to use, I fly fish and have had success with the more popular streamers wooly buggers, royal coachman, grey ghost and muddlers.

i find that trolling with a lake clear or x-mas tree in deep sections is better
i leave my peep site loose incase of a running deer. if they run to the right i swing to th right if they run to the left i swing to the left.

We managed to catch.... nothing. But a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.
