    just got back from fishing

went fishing tonight on the trophy section of the west canada.
i used my float tube for the second time. i really like it so far.
it's like fishing while sitting in a big, comfy, inflated, easy-boy chair.
only drawbacks to it are you can't handle any current or move quickly, and landing fish can be a real PIA. i'm gonna have to get a longer handled net or something.

so anyways, no luck for the first 1/2 hour, then i tied on a #12 humpy.

wham, first cast, snapped my 3.5 lb tippet.

    tied on another #12 humpy.

    wham, first cast again!
i played this one real gentle and after 5-10 minutes (always tough for me to tell how long a good fight is) i finally got the brute in - and snapped my tippet again.
atleast the second time i got a good upclose look. it was a 20+ inch browny. :headbang:

i only had the two humpies on me so i went with a royal wulff and had some luck, but no more monsters.

i landed a few decent guys (all brownies) the best being a 16 incher.

all and all a great evening of fishing with 2 lessons learned :

1] i should've had some other choices of tippet on me ( i only had the 3.5 lb )

    2] should've had more humpies !

Sacco- sweet...now what the heck is a Humpy? I just started into the fly casting...up untill know I have just used fly gear for trolling. I've been a couple of times to some local streams and caught a few small Brookies...it is a fun way of fishing. A day like you had yesterday sounds like a lot of fun.

      Feather Flipper!

Congrats on the fish caught and nearly caught. Just remember if you caught everything you hooked into it wouldn't be as much fun.
A man needs to believe in something. I believe I'll go hiking.

humpys are very bushy, fuzzy guys that float very well. they work great in some current, and even in calm water they ride high on the water - i like flies that i can easily see.

thanks Sacco...I don't see very well myself (d**n contacts...) so high riding flies are the ones for me...Have a good weekend!

i have decent eyes - but watching a tiny, half submerged, brown #22 fly 50' away is just not fun.

have a great weekend yourself, ken.

I love the float tube. I will break mine out in another month or so to fly fish for largemouth bass. I use mouse imitations in the spring and the bucketmouths literally jump out of the water after them.

It's a great way to spend a couple of hours, that's for sure!

That does sound like a lot of fun. Ive used those mouses spinfishing but never on a fly rod is there any tricks to it? What size rod do you use and leader etc. I might have to try that sometime.

Thread - red or orange or green....experiment

Tie in a clump of elk hair, tips pointing to rear to create a tail. Length of clump should be twice the length of the body. Wrap thread tightly forward forming the body. Then fold the elk hair over the body to create a shellback appearance. Tie down in front of body. Use the tips to create a upright divided wings. Then tie in some hackle..mixed griz and brown work fine.

Then go to stream and fish like Sacco!

                            Thanks Ness,

Humpies sound pretty easy to ty....I don`t know why I`ve never tried them before....I`ve seen them at flyshops...guess, they sort of slide under the rug when tying other flies....probably can create your own colors as you ty.....humpies must be very close in appearance to the elk hair caddis....

Thanks again, and good luck this weekend, if you can sneak out!
