    Nice day astream,but fishless....

Had great day on the river today...saw some beautiful turkeys on the way there ,with a big "tom" showing off fanning....he better be careful, May 1st is very close.... Also, saw a Harrier Hawk diving for a rodent , very cool!!!

Water was a chilly 47 F, but was at a great level....had high hopes as I worked through the woods to the upper streches....tried weighted flies of all varieties in tandem and alone...used splitshot and/or sinking tip to get flies down...thought one trout would move....I just think the rivers we fish have the most warm blooded trout I`ve ever seen ...they must like to bask/move when the water is in the high 50`s and into the low 60`s.....the cold nights did`nt help the water temp. this morning, but, no excuses.....enjoyed the day despite no takes....

Well, at least I ran into some good-lookin` Ostrich ferns....can`t wait to prepare these wild greens!!!!

Yep....I went out to a pond yesterday and got skunked too! The strange thing about this pond is the insect activity was as it usually is...lots of midges coming off, a Griffth Knat always produces in this pond. But yesterday, as I slipped into the water and float tubed out to the "honey hole" I was stopped by a very angry otter! At one point as I was facing shore I heard a hiss and growl about 20 feet behind me and when I turned she was doing this "serpent dance" with as much of her body as she could above the water as she hissed and growled at me.....I must say it was a bit unnerving with my butt and legs dangling in the water! What I really thought strange is I did not see one fish rise....not one. And for all the years I have fished this pond, the trout have always been very active going after the midges....where were the trout? Did the otters have something to do with it? It made me wonder...the pond is fairly small....maybe the otters have fished it out?

Anyhow, I got a few friends up this weekend and we are headed out for another go at it....different body of water this time....I'm still looking for my first of the year....yep, that monkey is still on my back!!!!

      Wow, good post Nessmuk...

Sounds alittle scary, looking face to face with an angry otter, sitting low in the water, practically defenseless...he/ she probably thought you were competing with her new "honey hole"...otters can eat alot of trout...

Hope you hook a few today ...let us know how you do...can`t beat the weather...enjoy the day!

      Tightlines,

Glad to see you got out, WB. I have been confined by work now for a couple of weeks, but I got skunked on my last couple trips. I can empathize...hoping to get out soon if at all possible.

The wife and I left Virginia had headed up to Tupper Lake to fish a few ponds last week, and basically, we got pretty well skunked as well. We were planning to stay a couple weeks, but the weather forecast kept calling for rain every day for 5 or so days, so came back after the first week....naturally, they changed it later on, and it was decent weather shortly after we left...the only place we did pretty well was Horseshoe Pond...got 25 or so brookies and 1 rainbow. Met a couple other fly fishermen on Mountain Pond. They said they fish it every year and do really well, but they had gone through a bunch of patterns with no luck. We also tried some spinning lures without a hit.

            Nessmuk,

I just got back from Stratford and fished the East Canada. Same report. Not one hit. Water was "nice" but freezing cold!

I fished the West Canada (upper reaches) with again no luck. Water was running about 50 degrees and was VERY clear. Temps at night up here have been in the 20's for the last 4 nights or so.....water is slow to warm up! I will hopefully be heading further north next week for a 3 day backpacking trip....I always catch some trout on my May camping trip.....so I guess my April fishless tradition continues.....I for one am looking forward to May!!!!

Today I noticed our little black fly friends are back!!! They are not biting yet.....but there are beginning to hover.....I actually like the sight of them...the fishing is always better during black fly season!

                Ness,

Its got to get better.... Nights are way too cool...water temps. can`t rise very well when its that cold at night....

                I hate to say it...but you`re right!

I don`t look forward to those black bugs, but they do spell better fishing when they come out..the fishing should pick-up in the next few weeks....

It seems very typical that the trout will hit as soon as ice breaks up on ponds for a short time. Then they go to sleep for 2 or 3 weeks before it picks up again with significantly warmer water in mid-May.

Its almost like they go on a feeding frenzy at ice-out , get there bellies so full that they do a Rip Van Winkle for a few weeks to wear it off....then go back on a regular feed when the water warms to their liking....

Fished St. Regis Pond and a few other ponds in that area - nothing for me.

Bright sun + days of east wind = crappy pond fishing
