I'm down in Virginia, and my wife and I are planning to fish the Central Adirondack region, lakes like Middle Setlement, Middle Branch, etc. Been checking out the website regarding ice out. Just wondering if anyone might know conditions in that area? Another question, We've got a set of wheels for a lightweight canoe that we use, and are wondering the best trail access to those lakes. Would appreciate any info anyone might have on getting to those lakes or any lakes in that general area that we might have a chance of getting some decent brookies. Thanks, Ken.

I have visual confirmation that Bear Lake and Gull Lake are ice free -I think if they are clear then Middle Branch Lake would be clear, Middle Settlement is in a deep valley and could still have ice -but I doubt it will be there for more than a couple more days. Water temps are rising quickly -Little Black Creel went from 33 to 39 degrees in a couple of days! Still feels cold to me though...

Ken, have you ever been on the trail into those lakes? You may want to rethink the canoe wheeling idea and just carry.
Aaron's info may be more recent but Sunday afternoon when I drove by Okara lakes they were still well frozen along with everything else further up the line. It's been pretty warm this week however so maybe they're out.Comment

Aaron, Creekwader,
Thanks for the replies. Creekwader, I used to live in Utica, and have been into Middle Branch and Middle Settlement, but a lot of years ago. I used the trail that goes in near Okara Lakes, but thought there might be a better one. You're right, it would be a job getting the canoe up the first part of the trail over the rocks, etc. We've wheeled it into some nasty places. The wheels are a mixed blessing. You can put all your gear in the canoe instead of packing it in on your back, but it can get tough on the uphill stretches. Maybe we'll just walk in and fish 'em from shore, and use the canoe on some ponds easier to get to. Thanks again for the info....KenComment
