Caught in a brook trout pond but that forked tail fin has me thinking splake perhaps?

That's really forked. Too forked for even a splake. I'd say a brook trout with a deformity or a wound.

This was my thought also, like maybe a snapping turtle took a bite when the fish was younger or something…

          Definitely a strange looking mutant.

          The fish looks weird, too.

          Jk nice fish

I'll bet it tasted just fine.

Is this a splake water? I'm going to lean towards splake, with just a rare, extremely forked tail. Looks like a big fish. I hope you share the photo with a DEC biologist to confirm.

ItÂ’s a stocked brook trout pond, and I havenÂ’t heard of anyone ever catching a splake in there in all the years IÂ’ve been going. Not to say they arenÂ’t in there because honestly I think that would be my first time ever catching a splake if it indeed was. A biologist is a good idea thanks will look into that.

My money is on a hatchery accident or deformity.

It has red/purple halos... brook trout with damaged caudal fin.

                          Thanks guys.
It was great to try & recreate a photo from 1984 at the same body of water, in the same canoe, and the same person in a similar shirt 37 years later..

And I couldn’t believe that I could not fit in stern seat facing backwards again.
