My cousins were out on Saratoga Lake yesterday, they said there was 4 to 5 inches of ice on the lake. They also said there was 8 to 10 inches on Great Sacandaga on Christmas day.

Thanks Lumberzac.....now if the ice can hang on until our next cold snap.....boy, this warm-up is lasting quite awhile...I guess I can`t complain too much....it might keep the oil bill a bit more reasonable....

I live on the southern end of Champlain and there has been a shanty on for about a week with around 6" of ice. With the warm weather lately though, I'm glad I waited to put my shanty out there. This area of the lake is used primarily for perch fishing, with some smelt, northerns, and an occasional laker mixed in.

          Thanks Gray Ghost,

I`ll have to play it by air....m,aybe there will be some ice left by this weekend somewhere.....

Use to ice-fish South Bay alot when I was first learning....I was in my early twenties and most events there was sitting in the shanty drinking beer and eating excellent venison sandwhiches....the ol` men I went with are all but retired to the ice up above, but I did learn a few things.....one of which is making sure you keep your holes skimmed and the bait checked frequently....also must have a good tolerance for beer farts and roughing it...we use to sleep over in the shanty and some of those memories are classics....now ,it seems like I`ve come miles since then....took along time to break those bad habits(drinking all day on the ice) and now try for trout soberly through the ice is awesome!!!!!!....alot of the thanks goes to my bro Marzrw....whom now keeps me pretty much sober with drinking hot coffee and eating a great hot breakfast cooked by my brother...so,I guess I`m very lucky now......so....when you mentioned the South End of Lake Champlain,my memory bank exploded...thanks for mentioning that...

Much of what you described sounds familiar to me too! Especially eating, tossing a couple back, and watching the tipups.

Sounds like I`m getting close to getting out there ....if the ice makes it through this next warm-up.....

I saw someone out on the ice at Saratoga, south shore, 500yds out, this morning....They've been on Round Lake for some time. With the warm wx, I'd be a bit wary, but that's just me.

My buddy and I were out on Sacandaga today. Where we were there was between 4 and 5.5 inches of ice. We drilled several test holes just to double-check the ice thickness as we walked out. There was about and inch of water on the ice from yesterdays ran on the ice this morning, by noon most of it was freezing and will probably be part of the lake ice by tomorrow. There is still open water near tributaries and the ice didn't look too good by the Bachelorville Bridge. Be careful and if you don’t feel safe out there, by all means don’t go.

I started off the New Year right. I went out on Saratoga Lake there was about 8”of ice. I caught 1 large mouth bass, 2 pickerel, and 1 pike. Hopefully I’ll get out again tomorrow.

The ice huts and snowmobliers are out on Fourth Lake (Eagle Bay side).
I'm not sure if they are fishermen or escaped crazy people out there on the ice.
I HEARD the ice was seven inches. Good Luck
