    Natural Spawn Rainbows

I grew up on a stream that I find pretty unique since it contains natural spawn rainbows. I don't want to state the name of the stream to protect the fishery (I don't really care if rainbows are native or not...they're still beauties that I'd love to protect). I try to keep the little 4-5" guys I catch in the water when i unhook them because not doing so usually results in their death. They are so delicate. When it seems they are really thick I avoid fishing all together.

Anyway, my question is about the large rainbows that we know as steelhead (which are the breeders I'd like to protect). Do they remain in the stream all season or go to the lake in winter before spring spawning? I'd appreciate input anyone has, and please, if you know what stream i'm referring to, please don't post the name. It is fished heavily enough as it is! Thanks. -GG

I believe that steelhead live most of the year in lakes and spawn in streams. They spawn in the winter.

(I am thinking of Lake Ontario steelhead)

I don't think the same rules apply to fish I'm referring to. I know they spawn in the spring. I think there is a difference because what locals call steelhead are not the same fish as what great lakes/ocean fisherman call steelhead.

I believe they go back to the lake, but at what point does a big rainbow become a steelhead?
