Gun Care.....

What do you do to take really good care of your gun?
I can read the manuals ect all day long, but the anecdotal/field advice is what I am really looking for.

I wipe it down with an oily rag after every outing,at the end of the season I completly strip down the weapon stock and all grt out the Q tips and clean every nook and cranny clean the barrel apply a coat of gun oil,reassemble and hang it in the cabinet. Hugh

A few weeks ago I gutted my 12 gauge and cleaned it from head to toe. This will be my yearly cleaning (I bought it used recently, so it was obvious once apart the prior owner took good care but never extensively cleaned it). Naturally I used a kit to clean the gun (since I'm new to gun ownership), and didn't know exactly what chemicals and process a good cleaning involved.

After use I put the gun into a 'sock' and store it away from excessive heat/light, and out of the cold (so it basically stays in a corner of the room out of the way). Even though they're tough, guns don't like being knocked around much. I would also imagine a gun rack would be harder on the barrel over time than leaning would be (since you're distributing more weight across the barrel when hung versus bearing most of the weight on the stock if leaned). Hanging the gun on a rack also exposes it to more dust and such from the environment. I'll always keep mine in some form of casing or sock.

These are all tips I've received from those much wiser than myself. Probably stuff you already know but figure I'd dumb the topic down a little for the other newbies like myself on the forum.
