Monday night the dog and i hit a small stream around 7:00 PM. Bug activity almost non-existant, but some fish were rising in slow water. I had a coffin fly and the Lafontaine caddis emerger still tied on from the day before. Thought they might like the caddis but they didn't. Replaced it w/a beetle and left the white fly on as a type of indicator (no way i could see that beetle).
I have determined that trout enjoy the beatles more than the stones. Sorry... that's pretty bad. Anyhow, they started dancing to that beetle. The drifts were painfully slow, and w/all day to look at it, they still took. My problem was that the first six fish all popped off. I kept checking the hook, and by the sixth fish, the beetle was gone.
Tied on an ant. That worked too. Finally a solid hookset. The first fish jumped two feet out of the water, and after photographing him, i had to spend 15 minutes reviving him. No more photographs. The water's too warm for that. Besides, it was cuttin' into my fishing time. Stick a few more w/the ant, and then i gotta go.
Had to get up at 3:30 AM to meet a friend on some bigger water. Yep, more fishin'. We needed to see what was going on in the wee hours. Started fishin' around 5:00. Occasional one-rise-wonders. We shoulda been fishin nymphs or buggers, but we stuck w/the dries. Very sporadic caddis; some egg-layers, some spent. Best fish of the morning took my large palmered caddis, just before i was going to remove it. A nice 16 incher on the first cast to a rise. Very fat fish.
We stuck a few more fish but all in all, there was no early magic hour to be found. Absolutely beautiful morning though. Nice cold water. Nice to be fishing w/o sweating. Then we got the hell outta there before the sun got hot.
