    Real Problem on the Indian

That stream guage on the indian has really opened my eyes. Check the link http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ny/nwis/uv?01315081 it hasn't been below 21.1 degrees in a long time and the low flows after the release are going to cause some real problems for the trout. 21.111 is 70 degree water temp and the critical point for trout to really stress out. 75 and they will start to die. it's 76.9 right now!!!! and it's only 11:45 am on a 90 degree day. I hadn't really had too much of an opinion on the rafting thing but I'm starting to think that a minimum flow must be benificial. I think it's a real problem. If your keeping fish, go fish it but if you c&r Find somewhere else.
I'll find 'im for 3...but I'll catch 'im, and kill 'im for 10

As mentioned in the "Cedar River Flow" thread below, the Indian was already hitting 73 degrees, and that was 18 days ago...!

Leave the rod home. Bring your net. Scoop up all the dead fish you can stand.
But catch it at the right time. Before they are flushed into the Hudson.

Sero, have you changed your opinion now on this up and down "yoyo" effect?
Years ago you could fish this river and only have to worry about the extreme releases a bit, now, I don't know.
As usual, Big Business rules. The local natives need the economy, but at the expense of nature as usual.

          What was my previous opinion...???

If you are referring to my opinion regarding trout living in other rivers, at much lower temps(!), you are comparing apples and
          Oranges.

I don't even wanna talk about what it does to the insects.
This is gonna get complicated, ...isn't it?

That poor rivers Ecosystem is very complicated and stressed ...

before long its going to look like "Water Slide World"...... completely void of aquatic life,,then all they have to do is add "Chlorine"

It's now June 27th, 3:10 and the river is 24.6 celsius...76.28 degrees!!!! If it's going to be like this I say we pettition to stop stocking trout in the Indian and put those somewhere else

Today marks 8 days of 90+ in the month of July in Albany, tieing an all-time record. I don't think anything can be done or expected to be done when there's record temps like this. it's part of the course of nature - stuff happens (droughts, tornados, floods, etc). We're in a heatwave.

Unless the Abenaki lake dam is dynamited and minimum flow agreements are reached for a BOTTOM release from the Indian Lake dam, there isn't much that can be done here. Yeah, the whitewater raft crowd doesn't help but hot is hot no matter how much water is being released. The Indian is a purely put and take fishery for stocked brown trout anyway and probably wouldn't be much more than that even if the stars aligned. I'd be more worried about the Hudson.

                      CW,

You are probably right about that. We have caught some nice trout on the Upper Hudson in the Blue Ledges region. Have been there when the bubble hits.
Shaq may be right about putting the trout elsewhere.
I actually wish we could have more catch and release streams to see if trout could produce naturally without stocking (I know dreaming), but we ain't never gonna see that for sure.

Don't worry guys, we got more fish, once they get done feeding the gulls we'll dump some more back in. Besides, a few of those holdovers have found that special little rock with the sprinkle of an artesian well comming up feeding them fresh cold water. Some will make it, always do.

                        Shaq,

Not going up on friday then I take it. After your report I may make the trip to the Ausable to do a little combat fishing. Maybe the Battenkill is a poss. too.

                          Indian

I know things won't change, I just have been awakened. I have always thought the indian was warm but not that warm. I agree alot of the trout will make it and the fishing will be good through the fall, heck, Ive caught trout in every month of the year on the Indian, even in a driving snowstorm in February. That was cool. SO when the Iso's are popping in Sept I will be fishing. I'm just a bit frustrated because this is the time one of the indian's major hatches. Those who fish it, know what I'm talking about, and the water belongs in a bath tub,

Totally agree with you Shag, its a shame the waters got to boil. Now of all times. The bugs were really starting to get rolling, I too love the magic hatches that swarm on ya each eve. Maybe we should do some sort of Indian dance for the Trout.

February??? Really??? Im usually on that hard water or in Pulaski. Great info, Im really looking forward to that!!
