I was up fishing, first time with a fly rod, on the East Branch of the Ausable. Between the 3 of us, not a single fish, or even a rise. Is the East Branch anywhere near as good as the West Branch?

Ned,
Whenever I`ve driven by it on the way to the West Br.(Rt.73) ,it always looked like it could use some water.Very low and very few goodlooking trout holding areas.Maybe its better downstream of Keene Valley(I do not know) .I have seen some flyfishermen fishing it and have heard a few things said about it.But, I don`t like the looks of it through the Keene area.
Ned, try the West Br. next time .There are quite a few trout to be had there.
And the water is perfect right now. But,even this river will warm and get low like all streams will this summer.Nows the time to check it out.
Goodluck,
WB"Get your mind off trout,if you can.I know they`ve got you.I can see it. Every fraternity of sufferers knows its brothers.Trout hook men;men don`t hook trout.Better try and throw the hook while you can.By the time you`re a grown man there probably won`t be a pure trout healthy enough to fiddle with"... Maybe absolutely beautiful and a little dangerous...
Maybe not.
I do two days of recon
and work HARD for every fish.
Show my brother these spots,
and the very same day he outfishes me 6:1, effortlessly.
When will he recon for me...?
I guess that's what big brothers are for...Comment

No mystery really. Certain stretches get gnarly at high water levels, but much of the E Br. is relatively mild. Descending or ascending some small gorges at any rate, can be tricky to say the the least.
I'm certainly no expert on either branch, but Ned, if you decide to fish the East again, i can tell you a few places where we caught lots of (stocked) rainbows.
To address your original question... the W Br. has more fish, and bigger fish.
It also has more fishermen. Many more. The last time i fished the East, i don't recall seeing another fisherman besides my brother.Comment

The East Branch requires lots of recon. There are some nice places to fish, but honestly, they're few and far between...especially compared to the West Branch, where the research has been done for you and is easily aquired in handy brochures and maps.Comment

Fvrwld hooked a couple of trout about 1/10 of a mile North of the Falls. Theres a sandbar and then a short one or two foot drop with a hile on the West Side under a rock ledge."If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it." Lyndon B. JohnsonComment

Thanks for the info. I just wanted to save my ego, since we got skunked. My buddy hasn't caught a single fish this year. I don't really fish that area much, I prefer lower level current. I can't wait, 3 weeks and I live full time in Oswegatchie country.
Any professional rock bass tournament circuits? I caught 7 of them in about 20 minutes this afternoon. I think I could at least pay for my tackle with the prize money.Comment
