    Confessions of a Fly Fisher

I really did not intend to mislead you...I joined the forum to talk with other people who share my passion of fly fishing (and of course the Adirondacks!) I feel I found a wonderful community here...so here is something I left out...my name is Mary Beth.

Yes, a female fly fisher who also brews beer...I figure some day I would like to meet up with you folks to do some fishing...thought this tidbit of info would best be shared here instead of shocking you if our paths ever cross. Besides, I feel like I know you folks, its time you get to know me a little better!

      Mary Beth... are you married...?

If so, maybe you have a sister who fly-fishes and brews beer...?

Its funny....for the past couple times heading out to fish I have been leaving a few extra brews in the cooler just in case I bumped into one of you! Then I thought...ya know...I really should tell them so they are not suprised! Hope this does not change anything...I'm really the same ole Nessmuk! Actually, Nessmuk is the name of my German Shepherd pictured here on the right, and that is little Shanti on my left. Nessmuk and Shanti would like to thank Daisy for giving me the idea to take them out fishing!

Sweet little brook there Mary-Beth! Always feel like I know the people on adkforum too, and ya know... like reading a book and you get a picture of all the characters in your head... I never quite knew how to picture you -- well that helps a bit Glad to get to know you better. Geez, and I'd scare the bejeeepers outta my girlfriend if I tell her I got to have a beer with a female fly angler!! JK JK of course... I still really want to try some of those wild brews.

...Somehow the cats just won't follow me out fishing. Although, they consistantly request I keep a couple for once

BAH! i'm so dissapointed. women can't flyfish.

              except maybe joan wulff.

              or Deanna Lee Birkholm.

and then there was that women my brother, sero, and i saw last weekend.

when we arrived on the river there was already 3 people on the water. the closest guy's timing was off a bit and his back cast kept snapping.
i pointed this out to my brother who is a recent flyfishing convert and has been having the same problem.

we sat and watched the 3 of them for 15 minutes and commented on how the women was the best caster of the 3, and how women in general make better flyfishers - more patience, less ego, and better casters since they don't try to "muscle" the rod.

              - and wouldn't you know, she was the only one to catch a fish.

Ya know, I am single. So anytime you wanna 16 year old, mature young man around the house to fillet the brook trout that you've caught through the day, I am your man!
I cherish the outdoors. Its the adventure, the unknown, and the call of the wild that gives me its thrill, passion, and deepest respect.

can't fish with 'em, can't fish without 'em!

Well well well.... case in point here

Had a freakin' great day fishing yesterday, I mean amazing... No state records, nothing super fancy, but.... lotsa brookie action

First I had run into a good size pod of smallies and I actually was having a blast working the smallies on flies, had some big ole streamers and I knew they'd like 'em.

I call Mel over and ask "Hey, you want to try for some of these smallies on a fly?", "Sure", I give her about 3 seconds bad explaination on how to roll cast... She makes a cast, not all bad for a first cast... Show her how to strip, she really went extra extra slow, misses a strike but still has line in the water, and keeps stripping, bang! She strikes and it's on, "What do I do?", well... I was about to show her how to get the fish on the reel, when I hear Sero's words in my head: "KEEP STRIPPING! KEEP STRIPPING!", So I said the same! I grab the net and get down to the water ready to scoop up a smallie...

Nope, it's a g.d. brookie!!!!! First cast of a fly, first fish on a fly... she scores an ~10" adirondack brookie. She took it on a monsterous florescent green & yellow lefty's deciever. Got a picture of that beauty, will post it up here momentarily. BTW, In case no one knew this... I've never taken a brookie on a fly inside the blue line before yesterday, she had to beat me to the punch just to rub salt in the wound And in case anyone has forgotten, I must've made 350 casts before my first fish this year.... grrrrrr!!!!! heheh

I don't have enough of an eye to tell a stocked brookie from a wild one, but... I cannot find this water on the DEC stocking lists on the web....

I wouldn't hook into a brookie for a while -- I think they were playing a game with me, and wouldn't take any fly that I had bought... As soon as I switched to a home made matuka (was indeed was a much smaller streamer than others I had been using), bada-bing! The action was so good, that the camera was a secondary tool, I only got one shot of a brookie I took, my biggest one, and it's blurry, so it's omitted.... I do though, have a pretty good shot of that first brookie mel got, the one on the deciever, and a shot of the "pool of the day" with a decent action shot of me netting a catch.

...mel putting me to shame, as usual!

Proto, what a cool story. That is excellent. Maybe you got Mel hooked now. That fish is awesome, looks pretty natural. And that stream looks pretty too. And of course, the girls seem to have that magic to get good stuff (like us) on the first cast. Good thing you had your camera. Perfect.
