    Strange finding

While my brother and I were on the trail friday. My brother yelled hey!!!!look at this!!!!!Oh my God,I said as we both looked down and stared at this huge porcupine dead on the trail. We could see no signs of physical injury.Would anybody know what would stand up to a porcupine, especially to actually take its life? Maybe old age?

From what I've heard, Fishers are fond of porcupine meat. The attack the unprotected belly of the porcupine and when done essentially leave nothing but a hollowed out body. The porcupine ends up looking like a coon skin cap.

Yep Fishers are fond of porcupine meat. But if there were no signs of injury it might have either died of natural causes or perhaps some gastronomical malady.

We didn't get close enough to examine it. Forensic science is n't our forte. Actually, don't know what our forte is, but forensics, no.

I was thinking ,maybe, as we approached the scene, we spooked off the animal(fischer)that made the kill.Just a theory of course. It did look like it had been dragged.Judging by its elongated body posture. Thanks guys for the info,I did`nt know fischers enjoyed the meat of the porcupine.

ok, got to chime in here. believe it or not fishers attack porcupines head on and attack the face and throat. it is a myth that they attack porc's from underneath. there was an auctaul documentry done that showed this. also read where hunters have witnessed it. i have caught a couple fisher with quills in their face and head which would support this.
longbows, flintlocks, trapping, and fly rods, its not just what i do its who i am!!

Thanks for the possible conclusion to our CSI episode in the north woods. WB wanted to know if he could tie any flies from the quills... Any ideas???? Maybe an actual Porcupine Quill Gordon...

I like Redhawk's "gastonomical malady" theory. Porcs love licking the salt & anti-freeze off of vehicles. That is if, it was less than a 1/4 mile from the road, they don't generally travel too far. Anti-freeze=poison.

Several years ago, some friends went into Spruce Lake. When they returned, they found that a porc had eaten their fan belt off. Luckily, they had some rope to fashion a makeshift fan belt out of and make it out to the nearest garage. Not the first time that I've heard of that happening............
