    Shaker Place (West Branch Sacandaga)

    Hi all,

I'm new here, but not new to the ADK's. After reading a lot of the threads here, I first want to say what a great community you all have here. You've already given me some great information and made me aware of some places I didn't know about, so thanks for that. Now I'm hoping maybe you can help me out even more!

I am planning a day flatwater trip with my less than agile mother for next weekend. I've done the West Branch twice before, both times putting in at the 2nd bridge on 10. The first time we paddled in to Good Luck Lake and camped there, the second was just a short afternoon trip and we only got to Trout Lake and back. This time I wanted to be able to get to the part futher downstream between Trout Lake, past Avery's, to Shaker Place, but I was hoping to still make it a short trip given that it will be with my mom. I'm especially interested in this stretch since I think some of it will actually be further away from 10, and therefore maybe a little quiter and without cars in view.

So do you guys think an up and back trip from Shaker Place is possible? Has the deal with IP changed the put in area at all - will there still be a locked gate? Will it be too steep or difficult to park?

Thanks a lot, any information or other suggestions is much apprecaited.

    IP lands

Well I do know that where there used to be ip lands near avery's, that's all bought up by the state now. But I dont know when that takes effect on the accessibility of the property. You might wanna ask the owner of avery's, as to what the deal is with that.
I cherish the outdoors. Its the adventure, the unknown, and the call of the wild that gives me its thrill, passion, and deepest respect.

Last I knew the gate was still locked. The river comes very close to the road just before the old getout. There is no reason a trip is not still doable. Just do not go beyond this point as there is no other "convenient" get out downstream.

I was just up there and the gate is locked. there is a nice get-in / getout right before the river bends to the old landing (behind the gate). There is plenty of room to park along the road and there is a grassy slope that's easy to get up or down. It's 6 miles to the rt 10 bridge over the WB Sac. I've always started there and then paddled downstream to the north. There were a couple beaverdams along the way as I remember.

          Shaker Place to Whitehouse?

Hey All, We are considering a multiparty Canoe/Kyack Trip in the same area. The guide books we have don't list conditions betwen shaker place an and white house is this doable this time of year? Plan to leave on the 13th.
          Thanks for any help.

You're not going to paddle from Shaker Place to Whitehouse. About a mile East of the confluence of Piseco Outlet and the West Branch you will encounter the first of five waterfalls and depending on the flow class V and higher Whitewater. Five Waterfalls...

Could be the ones, they hired Gary to go in and drag their boat out. Depending on water levels we may be paddling that stretch this weekend. Has Elbow creek came up at all ? Even if it has by the time I get out it will have dropped.

I don't think you'll be doing Elbow Creek. We were by there yesterday on the way home from Bog River. No where near any flow.
