    Ufa

    the Unsuccessful-Fisherman's Award.

Things have been going pretty good on the end of my line; thanks for asking.
During a slow stretch last week, one gloomy/stellar day, i simply couldn't resist.
I admit it; sometimes i think about all the fishermen out there who aren't catching anything.

So, within this spirit, please feel free to use this image to degrade your fellow brethren.
Use it upon yourself, if you must; whereupon you would be an honest fisherman.
But of course we all know... there is no such thing as an honest fisherman...

I fail to see the humor in this, but what i truly fear is the award that will be bestowed upon the fisherman who doesn't fish.
At least the guy out there not-catching anything is trying a little.

Hey, before they sprouted, those were fiddle heads which are edible you know. Just picked some today to go with Mother's Day dinner. Saute them in some butter and some seasonings and you're good to go. Didn't know I was a gourmet chef to boot did you.
By the way, what's a slow stretch for you? A day or two without trout? We wish we had it as bad as you. But I do get your point. I'm sure glad I finally got out, even if Chubby hadn't taken my fly twice, it still would have been a nice day anyway.
And.... honest fisherman....thought you were an honest fisherman.... well....

      Marzrw,
I think what Sero is referring to in the photo,is the clump of "skunk Cabbage".Get it, skunk as in getting skunked.I don`t think you will find skunk cabbage sprouts very palatable. How many pops did you have before viewing the thread?
How did your fiddleheads come out?Did you flash fry them in olive oil?Recipe?

Every fraternity of sufferers knows its brothers.Trout hook men;men don`t hook trout.Better try and throw the hook while you can.By the time you`re a grown man there probably won`t be a pure trout healthy enough to fiddle with"... I realized that after I wrote my reply. Must have been the Guinness that fogged my brain.

Didn't know you were a fiddlehead! Now we have been forced to institute a Fiddlehead Award. Congratulations.
You are the incipient recipient of the prize.

Two days ...in the last six months! (The fish gods have been berry berry good to me).
I got skunked one day back in early January. I was mortified! Drove home, shaking uncontrollably all the way. Had to come back the very next day to lift the curse.
I also got skunked on that pond trip last month, but that didn't bother me. Fly-fishing on ponds is very new to me. I didn't have any great expectations. I guess i shouldn't count that one.

well... i haven't lied about anything. ...just haven't told the whole truth. Don't think i'm obligated to do that. It's not in my contract. I see no harm in exxaggerating my prowess either, but as a rule, i don't find it necessary, so i don't do that.

Anyhow... you've probably heard the very olde saying: "He who tells the truth, is surely to be hanged.".

Don't know exactly if I deserve an award since through the fog of Guinness I mistook your skunk cabbage for fiddleheads, but thanks anyway haven't received an award in a longtime, actually maybe never.

Whatta 'ya mean, doesn't count. Everyone here should vote if they agree, if your line was in the water and you didn't catch a fish, you're skunked, plain and simple.

Vote if you so desire, but I think marzrw's remark settles it for me. If it upsets him that much; i have decided not to count that one as a skunk.

                    Let's go fishing sometime.

...and Yes, you do deserve that award.

just to break sero's chops.... i'm sayin' that's a skunked day too

I consider it a skunked day for me, but.... i'm not counting those days -- cause they're-a-plenty!

I was telling sero... I took a skunking the other day at the "pool where the tree fell" (for the lack of a better name), all the fish were deep in the water, and there was a midge hatch on. It's a pisser cause you can see those suckers clear as day. I tried half the nymphs I had, and a few streamers.... best I could get is a few looks.

I've been walking some parts of the oriskany near the evening probing for where fish are holding in my stompin' grounds... barely even fishing -- watching more than anything. It is true, the hatches are heatin' up on the O. I've seen some thick hatches of what I think are caddis, little light gray-ish/tan-ish ones (size like 16 or 18) skating on the surface of the water... And in drovves. I've yet to see a riser though. I brought a rod last night and tossed a bugger into a juicy pool.... and got my best action of the year... had a fat-ass guy come check out that bugger and refuse it. Well... Seeing I'm still skunked there.... That's a satisfying day for me, I'll just be content with that

Also.... Took a swim in that same pool -- by accident (obviously) My first swim of the year. Cell phone took a swim too, got wet and shut down :/ I took it apart and dried it -- luckily it's sprung back from the grave *whew*. Somehow I left my camera back with my pack / schtuff.... I had taken some photos of the flies on the water, and forgot to bring the camera with me, bonus!

Proto, If I get the fiddlehead award, you get the accident prone award, hands down.

I've been sniffin' and scrutinizing my log books, and still can't seem to find that skunk of April 22. It simply seems that it never happened. My logs don't lie. They stand straight up.

Scott dragged me out in the blazing sun of Monday, to look for risers. Against my better judgement, i decided to go. Scott KNOWS there's a 50 fish afternoon there, on dries. He just hasn't hit it yet. He will. He's tired of buggers.

Speakin' of buggers, i swung some through some new riffles last night, and some savage fish hooked themselves.

Marzrw, proto accident prone? The guy wears a life-preserver walking on concrete. He'll out-live us all.

one last thought... both proto and sacco make beautiful casts. It's true. It's a pleasure to watch them cast. Truly beautiful. Problem is... the fish are not impressed. They seem to prefer my sloppy cannonball-sling-shot technique.

It's medieval. I think i'll call it 'the trebuchet'.

                            THE TREBUCHET

Like I said in an earlier thread about casting, you can be as a good a caster as you please and it certainly helps if you're an excellent caster, but average or below average works too, especially if you're the one catching the trout. Also, gotta think like a trout and give em want they want.

You got it! I always ask myself, 'if i was a trout today, where would i be?'.

                              What are my needs?
                              What do i want?

That's all well and good. Then comes the part where your brain shrinks to the size of a pea. Have i said this before?

I try not to Look in my fly-boxes when i'm hungry.
Hate waking up w/hooks in my mouth.
But i'd rather do that than make beautiful casts to empty water.
