    Black Flies yet?

Anyone know what the black fly situation is in southern ADKs right now?
And approximately when the little nasties will start biting in earnest and in swarms in that area?

    Thanks....

Soon. I saw some in Lake George Sunday, were swarming but not biting. My guess is any day!

I have not seen any yet around here (SW Dacks)...my general rule of thumb is May 15th through mid June for the worst of it. I highly reccomend a bug shirt if you venture into the Dacks during black fly season! The only good thing about black fly season is the fishing is usually pretty good!

Saw some at Putnam Pond (Pharaoh Lake Wilderness) this weekend and they have been on and off in central Saratoga County since mid April.

I have not seen any black flies where I live (near the western high peaks). It was snowing/hailing here today - enough to cover the ground for a couple hours. Hopefully we won't see any biting bugs until mid May.

                Southern Dacks Hatch

Hiked into Murphy Pond in Hope today and the black flies were out.

Put on some 100% deet and it was like they wern't there....

It was a beautiful day for a hike... I went around the back side of middle and on to Murphy, had lunch at the lean to with Tractir and Nipper and hiked out. An easy 6.5 miles rt.

Wasn't a bug in the air on Saturday (5/7) in the High Peaks Region.

I find it impossible to believe that black flies, much like reporters, would even think to bother the Hawkman.

Amazing what a couple of warm days can do! I was on Eleventh Mt. Sunday with no bugs.

Joanne and I were on Black Mt. and Millman Pond this weekend (I'll post a belated trip report soon) and saw not a single bug. It was very windy and cool (probably 50-ish), which would have kept most bugs away. But others are right - it's only a matter of time...

                          They hatched today here, literally....

They wern't here, and then there were swarms.....nothing deet couldn't handle.

The black flies don't bother me... it's those damn carniverous predatory delta winged piranaha (deer flies) with the seek and destroy mentality that really tick me off.

                              Black flies have arrived!

They are not really hungry yet....but they are beginning to swarm and bite a little. The heat beat them back today, but I am sure they will make a rebound!

Remember....there is not a single black fly in the adirondacks.....they are all married and have large families!
